Director (Owner)Pollen Studio Landscape Architecture Jan 2011 - PresentBrunswick, VictoriaPollen is an award-winning landscape architecture studio with a mission to ‘empower communities to connect with and love their environment.’ Our extensive experience in local government and private practice has enabled us, in collaboration with our clients, to realise a range of landscape architectural projects from small-scale public parks to large public domain sites. We have endeavoured to frame all aspects of our operations, communications, and relationships, both internally and externally, through a set of core values:COURAGE: never shying away from difficult tasks or hard conversations;OWNERSHIP: being accountable for outcomes, being inclusive and always ‘walking the talk’;BALANCE: considering all options and viewpoints and exhibiting restraint when necessary;ADAPTATION: frequently questioning, adding value and refining on the run;ENGAGEMENT: facilitating meaningful community input and always being ‘present’ when speaking and listening. Our rigorous, collaborative and dynamic approach allows us to engage with our client's vision to create project outcomes that are an amalgamation of a whole project team’s combined skills and ideas; landscapes which excite and intrigue, resulting in measurable positive change for daily users.Pollen nurtures projects to evolve into self-sustaining, community-driven outcomes where the completion of the project is just the beginning. -

Studio Lecturer, ‘Studio Eurymodal’ Design Research StudioRmit University Feb 2012 - Jul 2012Melbourne, AustraliaHow will our future cities respond to forces of change? How can future cities become sustainable and adapt to changing conditions caused by climate, politics and social upheaval? Climate change and social upheaval often means we have to change our living circumstances rapidly to respond. Our urban landscapes also have to adapt quickly, coping with changes in sea level, increased inhabitation, access to resources and changes to infrastructure. There are many possible scenarios that could induce the need for rapid adaptation. Eurymodal aims to explore some of those scenarios and test them in an urban environment that is particularly susceptible to change. Eurymodal looks towards simple low-cost technologies, mobile and emergency architectures as well as planning for future proofing. As a part of the studio, key animations, sketches and models will be presented at an exhibition as part of the 2012 Melbourne Fringe Festival. -

Tutor/Lecturer Environments 4 + La Tech ResearchRmit University Feb 2011 - Jun 2011This course is the fourth and final course in the environment stream. Environments 4 + LA Tech research is concerned with how experimentation and innovation are part of everyday practice in design-oriented landscape architectural offices. The course does not focus on the broad conceptual scale of major projects. Instead, it turns its attention to how innovation can be embedded into projects through the design development and documentation of smaller scale component parts and systems. And then, how this level of detailing is vital for the realisation of the broader concept. -

Studio Lecturer, ‘Studio Risk’ Design Research StudioRmit University Jan 2009 - Jun 2009Studio Risk (RMIT University) Collaborative project with Susan HeckerAs design professionals, Landscape Architects operate in an increasingly litigious world, forced to make decisions within quantifiable constraints, regulatory guidelines, danger vs. risk, allowable risk, calculated risk. The corporate world is hyper-focused on strategically planning for Climate Change, not because of an impressive concern for global sustainability or environmental goodwill but because of a legal obligation to shareholders to understand the risk to profit margins. This Studio offered a sative approach to imagining sustainability as working towards redefining perceived parameters, building critical design intelligence. It was about leading change instead of defaulting to reactive solutions within set boundaries. -
