Research InternEcoseas Laboratory Apr 2023 - Aug 2023Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte D'Azur, FranceIn the Mediterranean, Harmful algal bloom (HAB) events have been increasing over the last 30 years, and HABs in benthic systems are of particular concern. They mostly involve blooms of the toxic species Ostreopsis cf ovata that reoccur yearly, covering rocky shores and macroalgae and evolving as mucilaginous floating aggregates that can lead to mortalities of benthic organisms and human illness through skin contact and inhalation of aerosols. The occurrence of Ostreopsis blooms have been linked to ocean parameters such as sea surface temperature as well as to the structure and function of benthic habitats, yet data remain insufficient for the development of models in support of early warning systems. The objective of this internship is to contribute improving monitoring and prediction of HAB events through historical data analysis (of bloom occurrence and satellite ocean color) and field work observations.
