Due to the nature of data and applications in use, what would have been a fairly automated system ended up having the Op staff having to manually do all command codes and networking protocol executions by hand over a Unix system, as well as an A/S 400 environment running a custom OS, written in COBOL. While having to work with such a mainframe we also had an integrated ‘modern’ internal network to negotiate. I was also on the swing shift during this time and had been trained to do three different Op and Administrative positions. I also functioned as an ‘Auditor’ that would review, train, and cross-train hundreds of staff to work with the multiple solutions as well as basic and advanced systems operations.
