Group improvisation, rooted in the works of Viola Spolin and Del Close, is practiced throughout the length of the course. I wrote plays with the students which were then performed on our school stage, and directed dramatic and musical works such as Disney’s Beauty & the Beast and The Laramie Project. We read, analyzed, and performed selections from a diverse array of works such as August: Osage County, Doubt, Angels in America, A Doll’s House, Rabbit Hole, A Raisin in the Sun, and Clybourne Park. I developed a teaching partnership with the Philadelphia Theatre Company, which brought guest artists and industry professionals to instruct the class, and gave our students the opportunity to attend performances of the company’s 2015/2016 season and participate in post-show talkbacks with the casts. I worked with my students to compose and submit monologues to the Philadelphia Young Playwrights 2016 Young Voices Monologue Competition, and one of my students had her piece selected from among hundreds of submissions to be performed by professional actors onstage at the Drake Theatre as a part of the 2016 Young Voices Monologue Festival.
