More people, including small business owners, produce their own written material on their own PCs - including contracts, reports, promos, web pages etc. The built-in spell checkers, though quick and easy to use, aren't a substitute for the human eye, and may miss some fairly basic errors! Some of the things we human proofreaders do better....- check the sense of what is written, and suggests alternatives if it doesn't look quite right - check that any tables and diagrams have been included, are in the correct place, and are correctly numbered and annotated- ensure that footnotes correspond with the numbering in the text - check for extra words in the text - and missing ones!!- check for missing sentences - and in some cases, paragraphs!- spot when a correctly-spelled word is being used in the wrong context (eg 'their' and 'there')- ensure that the meaning of what is written has not been changed by either an additional, or wrong, word (eg 'not' and 'now').
