The coiled tubing fatigue research I performed in the summer of 2012 involved testing coiled tubing samples to failure in cyclic bending with static internal pressures up to 10,000 psi, simulating the conditions the tubing will subjected to in the field. These tests were performed for the Coiled Tubing Mechanics Research Consortium (CTMRC). In addition to performing these tests, I assisted in installing a new test machine and hydraulic power unit, assisted in building a new tubing defect maker, and helped construct a mount to affix a 3-D laser scanner to a sample to generate a map of surface defects for future analysis.

My project was to develop documentation and process specific planning for a new elevator program with AIRBUS. This required me to spend a week with AIRBUS representatives from Spain to learn how to use the new tools for this program and create a set of instructions for the tools. The partnership with AIRBUS would make NORDAM the only company other than AIRBUS to be able to perform a specific type of repair. Alongside this project I completed training courses in Composites, lean and six sigma practices, finance, and supply chain, as well as assisting in the generation of a number of work instructions for another program. As I worked with my mentor, my fellow interns, and the stakeholders at the repair division I learned the value of collaboration, working with the “internal customer”, and working as a team to produce results that are satisfactory for everyone using them. Overall the summer was a wonderful learning experience that I was grateful to have.
