I am a Cohesity Backup Software Engineer working a contract for the FBI. I carry a TS/SCI w/CI Poly clearance. I manage, maintain, administer a Cohesity backup solution for several FBI networks. Daily duties include all functions and responsibilities for a major data center. This includes installing, patching, upgrading, monitoring, maintaining, adding clients, adding backup jobs, reporting, and restoring files.

I am the founder and President of this non-profit, 501c3 charitable organization. I am responsible for all aspects of all daily operations and efforts. Our mission is to help homeless veterans to get off the street and back to contributing to society. Our goal is to build a village of tiny houses to be living spaces. To provide meals, visits to doctors, therapy sessions, AA or substance abuse assistance, PTSD counselling, job search and placement assistance.

My contract ends on June 30th. I am working at US MEPCOM HQ, under the Dept. of the Army. I was brought in to evaluate and rebuild a failing Tivoli Storage Manager backup system. After evaluation, I reconfigured the whole system, and began performing daily backups again. Once the system was operational, I worked with other teams to integrate other backups that were being performed. I also researched and recommended a purchase that would fulfill a business requirement to get their backups offsite. I expanded the TSM backup to incorporate all of the production environment that was not being backed up when I started. I also evaluated the whole back environment and made recommendations for future enhancements and/or system replacement. I am currently responsible for 135 production servers (clients) backups, managing 180+ TB of data.

This contract was for the recovery of Hol-Mac Corp’s Spectrum Protect backup system after a ransomware attack. I was the Consulting Recovery Engineer. I was the onsite lead for a team that was responsible for all aspects of the recovery of Hol-Mac’s Backup systems. We re-installed Spectrum Protect and rebuilt their entire system including their database.

This contract was for the US Department of Defense where was the Senior TSM Systems Engineer. I was a part of a team that was responsible for installing and implementing a newly designed backup and recovery system for the Joint Services dept. This project installed and configured 18 Spectrum Protect servers, 18 direct attached storage devices, and 6 disk storage devices. We also installed and configured 2 Operations Center servers, and 2 Frontsafe servers and 2 Frontsafe DB servers. The TSM servers ran on Linux platforms. Our clients were also on Windows platforms. We also used TSM TDP for SQL.We were an all disk operation. We were using the SP replication feature for our Disaster Recovery. I was responsible for TSM client software installs, TDP installs, and TSM server setups.

I am responsible for administering the Data Domain units which run on a limited Unix platform. We use the Data Domain units to replicate or data to multiple locations for DR purposes. I am responsible for TSM client software installs, TDP installs, and TSM server setups. I am also responsible for file/file system restores using the GUI and the command line. I investigate & resolve client misses and failures. I am involved in capacity planning, system design, and product reviewing and testing, and all aspects of TSM server administration. I served as a consult to FDS on a project for the Army at the Pentagon in Arlington VA, during a transition from one primary contractor switching to FDS as the new primary contractor. My experience was used to offer guidance for continued success and future improvements in the Tivoli Storage Manager Administrator job duties and functions. I advised them on current and future administrator personnel needs, as well as roles and responsibilities for the TSM environment. I also advised them on current and future hardware and software needs and areas where process improvements could benefit the project.I provided advice and directions pertaining to Tivoli backup systems during a transition between primary contractors. This contract was performed for the US Army Information Technology headquarters at the Pentagon. This was strictly a consulting position, not meant to be full time. It was personally offered to me by Md. State Representative Jamie Benoit. In this position, I offered recommendations on hiring administrators, servers, storage devices, backup clients, backup schedules, and rotations.

We had clients on Windows, AIX, and HP-UX platforms. We also used TSM TDP for SQL and TDP for Databases. We used ADIC Scalar i2000 tape libraries with LTO2 and LTO3 tape drives. I was responsible for tape procedures where we carried tapes to and from an offsite location, and where we sent tapes to and from a DR location. At the DR location we restored the TSM database daily to bring DR up to date with our production system.I was responsible for TSM client software installs, TDP installs, and TSM server setups. I was also responsible for file/file system restores using the GUI and the command line. I investigated & resolved client misses and failures. I was involved in capacity planning, system design, and product reviewing and testing, and all aspects of TSM server administration. I was also involved in disaster recovery testing, and I assisted in the upgrade of the TSM Server software from 5.3 to 5.4, then to 5.5 and also associated TSM client upgrades.

We have clients on Windows, AIX, Linux, and Solaris operating systems. We also use TSM TDP for SQL, Exchange, Oracle, and Informix. I have also worked with SQL clustered servers as clients. West uses IBM 3494 tape libraries with either 3590 or 3592 tape drives, and IBM 3584 and IBM TS3310 libraries with LTO3 drives. West also has multiple remote sites that use DLT and LTO tape drives, and we also have TSM systems that are all disk backups with no tapes.I am responsible for TSM client software installs, TDP installs, and TSM server setups. I am also responsible for file/file system restores using the GUI and the command line. I troubleshoot client misses/failures and implement changes to resolve problems. I was involved in capacity planning, system design, and product reviewing and testing, and all aspects of TSM server administration. I also lead projects for system upgrades and/or system additions, and I have also written formal proposals that were accepted by West management to recommend projects to upgrade TSM systems and libraries. I assisted in the upgrade of the TSM Server software from 5.2 to 5.3, and also associated TSM client upgrades.

I was on a contract at Ford Motor Company. The job required administration of remote TSM servers from Ford's headquarters in Dearborn, Mi. I worked with a team that installed and configured the TSM software. We also monitored all backup and administrative jobs and resolved any issues that arose in day to day operation. We were administered 50 remote TSM servers, and backed up nearly 900 clients. In addition to my TSM administration duties, I was responsible for working with people in remote Ford locations to bring our service into their site. I did site assessments, recommended hardware appropriate to their needs and continued communications with them answering questions and coordinating efforts all the way through the installation. I was also involved in training end users to do tape rotations, restore operations, and general TSM uses and terminology.I was involved in an audit of procedures where we were working with several other IT areas to review our processes and procedures and to create new standards to ensure that we were backing the required data from all of the data owners.Additionally, I was involved in a "proof of concept" for a tape less backup system. We were installing and evaluating new hardware and software and making recommendations to Ford as to whether they should invest in the product. In a separate evaluation, we were testing an IBM TS3310 tape library that utilizes LTO3 technology and will replace the 3583.

The backup and recovery/disaster recovery area was my focus. I progressed from operating the backup systems on multiple platforms to administrating the TSM systems for the last year and a half. I also was the administrator of several Veritas Backup Exec servers. I managed and monitored the TSM server which runs on AIX. I created TSM domains and policy sets as well as backup and archive policies. I also controlled 10 backup servers located at remote offices and shops. During that time I have installed software including Windows 2000/2003 server, Veritas Backup Exec, and Tivoli Storage Manager. I have also installed workstation operating systems and software. My duties also included hardware installation and troubleshooting. I have experience with multiple tape drive systems ranging from 4mm to SDLT and LTO drives. I was responsible for the backup and recovery of all of the Windows Servers (150), AS400’s (6) and RS6000’s (20) at the corporate office of my company. I was also responsible for the tape library management. I was responsible for restores of data that had been lost due to viruses or deletions.I submitted a formal proposal for and I completed the conversion of the windows servers in the data center to Tivoli Storage Manager. I was the principle person who worked with our offsite storage provider for our backup tapes. I re-negotiated our contract with them which saved our company a minimum of $1000 per month. And I negotiated reductions in the costs of several hardware and peripheral purchases, saving thousands of dollars. I have also written successful business proposals to recommend these cost savings.
