I love being a human. I have been one for as long as I can remember.From my perspective, the depth of our relationships is a huge part of what makes us human. Sure, other members of the Animal Kingdom form strong social relationships (except for my chickens--they start pecking their eggs if I don't grab them fast enough). But the ability to choose, direct, and develop--or not--a particular relationship is something that is truly unique to Homo sapiens (I'm not connected with any ethologists, so this statement probably won't be challenged).Personally, I find forming, developing, and maintaining relationships with others to be endlessly rewarding and, at times, incomparably challenging. Fortunately, there's a way to get paid to do what I love--it's called Business Development in the corporate world (or "Sales" for normal people like me).I derive a great deal of personal satisfaction from solving problems for other people.In the past, I have done sales for other companies. Today, I sell for my own company, and the problems that I am solving vary from one day to the next. Some days I look for post-tensioned cables in a concrete slab. Other days I look for unexploded ordinance, or septic tanks, or gold (that's a rare one), or lava tubes.It's pretty nice to offer a valuable service and have fun doing it.I also love collaborating with my peers around the world. That love, and the need to develop myself and my skills, are what sprouted the seed of the GPR Consortium. This trade association seeks to promote collaboration among ground penetrating radar professionals around the world. We are starting very small, but there is already a great deal of international excitement around this topic. Who knows where we will end up?
