My varied professional activities balance PREVENTION of illness and disease with its TREATMENT. Individuals far too often believe their health is a matter for which their physician is solely responsible. While there is a responsibility physicians rightfully hold for their patients, my experience has taught me that health is best achieved and sustained when patients maintain primary ownership of their own health status. Empowering individuals and families, reconnecting them to sources of personal and corporate power, are the ideals that inspire both my practice of psychiatry and work with families.I have maintained a private adult and adolescent psychiatry practice for 30 years, Prior to that time I served as a physician executive in community mental health, first as a medical director and later as VP for medical affairs of a 26-county mental health center consortium. In 2004, ForSoundMInd Enterprises (FSME), LLC was created to promote mental health and wellness for professionals as well as families, the most basic building blocks of our communities. Simply waiting for behavioral dysfunction and emotional stress to manifest as "disease" became professionally untenable, as I believe acquisition of basic life and emotional literacy skills can go a long way toward preventing these problems.
