Another major client was a major international food chain that was having problems procuring their entire product from their US distributors. They asked me to provide all types of products, both dry and frozen to African stores. I was flown to South Africa to discuss their needs, and provided them with samples of several requested products. I toured stores in Cape Town and Johannesburg and identified gaps. On my return to the states, I researched more cost-effective alternatives and additional variety options; I was given full rein. I considered product, shipping and customs as well as the currency fluctuation as part of the equation. Show less

I was hired to assess the problem and come up with solutions. I implemented and enforced existing as well as a number of new policies and procedures. The 2018 audit of the resulting financials reported favorably upon the changes that I made. Highlights include the following new procedures: 1. Weekly timecards had to be initialed and approved by one’s immediate supervisor. 2. All paid time off had to be requested in advance in writing, unless it was an emergency, and approved before it was taken. Paid time off could only be taken in the year it was allocated. 3. Anyone could apply for newly available positions, and hiring was based on qualifications. Several new hires resulted. 4. Handling of cash, including book fines and supply purchases, was revamped. Cash was counted each evening and recorded in a daily log before being locked up in a safe each night. An Excel spreadsheet was used to reconcile cash fines from all three branches on a monthly basis. 5. The library board of trustees’ checking account was tracked, using a shared QuickBooks account online for ease of regular audits, and reconciled monthly down to the penny. A two-signature check signing system was enforced for additional oversight and accountability. Show less

When I first walked into this startup advertorial company, the principals had not reconciled their bank statements in 2 years. I literally sat down on the floor, putting all the checks in order. By the end of the first week, I had the company up to date with their bank statements. The one request I made was that neither of the owners were allowed to go near the checking account again as long as I was in their employ! The one request I made was that neither of the owners were allowed to go near the checking account again as long as I was in their employ! My role at Hemisphere grew from general administration to human resources, including hiring and firing. I also investigated and selected insurances from medical and dental to 401K, flexible spending accounts and disability. When the company started looking for a larger office space, I was included as one of the major decision-makers, along with the two partners. I chose the business machines and their leases, implemented policies and procedures, and created commission structures. The company grew by more than 700% while I was employed there, expanding into a busy professional office. Show less
