My 'boss woman' gave me a big dreaming before she died; she said, "Frannie - you gotta teach our mob to make and use bush medicines old ways again and make bush medicines easy to get for everyone". Now - that's a pretty hard ask!Bringing 'old-ways' bush medicine into the mainstream and making it easily available for Aboriginal people is no mean feat.I was staying out on a remote community where people preferred to get 'medicine advice' from me rather than go to the Community Nurse. An elder told the DON (Director of Nursing) at the nearest Hospital that they wanted me to take over from the Nurse and the DON said she'd happily employ me instead of the Nurse. Another community, not too far away also wanted me to work there too.I realised that there was a big demand for my knowledge and that I couldn't be in too many places same time and realised that the way to go would be to write and develop courses for Aboriginal Health Workers.There are many very complex issues involved in doing such a thing and a decade now after the death of my 'boss woman' this dream has not progressed far.I did however write a short eBook that overviews some issues that are involved. The book is written in 'yarn-karryia' way and is in 2 parts. The first part is 'protocol business'; it explains who I am, where I came from, how I got to be in my situation and the tasks 'given to me'.The second part discusses the enormous difficulties involved in making such a 'dream' happen and discusses the complex issues that are at the nub of the pharmaceutical model used in mainstream medicine and how Indigenous intellectual property rights (IPR) could so easily be breached. Indigenous Education Research Paper:Entitled, " Finding a Culturally Appropriate Match between the CGEA (Certificates of General Education for Adults) Curriculum Framework and the Educational Needs of Indigenous Prisoners".This research was commissioned by the Adult Literacy Node of Curtin University and was conducted by myself and Terri Hughes (Aboriginal Education Co-ordinator, Department of Justice) and mentored by Jill Abdullah (Centre for Aboriginal Studies, Curtin University). 1999.This Paper provides insights into why Indigenous learners so often fail within mainstream education facilities and serves to highlight now to make Education a far more 'user-friendly' situation for Aboriginal learners.
