Chemist (Biochemistry)National Institutes Of Health Feb 1960 - Aug 1964This was the most fertile and pleasant working environment, where I tremendously enjoyed working as a Biochemist. We did breakthrough work in early diabetes research. I loved the people and working with animals, doing in vivo and in vitro studies on respiration and substrates, with radioactive isotopes. They let me take the Radioisotope, Week-long course, in which I learned how to calibrate Geiger and Scintillation counters and used them most effectively. The Doctors in my Endocrinology Section also let me calibrate our scintillation counter. And I got my own license to be able to order my own radioisotopes because I had taken the course. Scientists come from all over the world to take this course to be able to use radioisotopes in their labs.(I was also living in DC when President Kennedy was killed. That was very sad at NIH, as chairs and lab stools were in hallways trying to listen to radio news.) The only reason I left there was due to the fact that I had been accepted to Indiana University School of Medicine and started in 1964. At NIH, the Doctor with whom I worked told me I was the best lab associate they ever had. I am co-author on 2 prestigious Journals there, and thanks for assistance on many other papers. Each year I was given permission to go to the Atlantic City Meetings for the Proceedings of Experimental Society of Biology & Medicine.. I enjoyed that time very much, and at the end of the day I went swimming in the Motel Pool to get refreshed from a most demanding day on the Boardwalk going from one meeting to another and to our own, and had dinner sent.up to my room.. One year I even let my Boss drive my car back home to NIH.
