About Frances A. Chiu, Ph.D.

Oscar Wilde is purported to have mentioned in a conversation, “I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.” As another Oxford University graduate (English Ph.D.), I feel the same way! That’s why I’d like to see everyone fulfill their wildest dreams and reach for the stars 🌟 with better writing! I am a freelance academic editor, part-time associate professor, and former caregiver. If you’re looking for someone to edit your thesis, article, book proposal, or book, I should be your top choice. Unlike many editors out there, I am a book author who has also contributed book chapters, book reviews, essays for peer-reviewed journals, and articles for popular media while performing peer reviews for journals and book publishers: in other words, I know what book and journal editors are looking for, so I can guide prospective clients from the dual perspectives of published writer AND editor. My twenty years of experience in university-level teaching also means that I am particularly adept in helping others—whether undergraduate or faculty—organize and structure any written text, craft a more cogent argument, and write the perfect sentence. My skills include: —Over 20 years of undergraduate teaching experience, including online and onsite, with excellent course evaluations and faculty observation reports—20 years of writing for peer-reviewed journals —10 years of performing peer reviews for journals in literature, history, and political thought (which means evaluating academic essays written by university faculty)—7 years of book writing —5 years of doctoral dissertation editing (not including my own!)Here’s a bit about me:—I’m a native English speaker and writer who learned French and German in secondary school and college. I was also raised by multilingual parents—and as such, I understand the different challenges faced by native and non-native writers of English alike.—I have a Ph.D. in English literature from Oxford University (yes, THAT one).—Despite my specialization in English, I have a solid grounding in the humanities, arts and social sciences including other literatures, history, art, and music. —I believe in good and timely communication so I’ll always answer your emails in less than 24 hrs. —I’m also a fast worker who can adapt to your needs.See below for further details on my past and forthcoming publications, book proposals, teaching, education, recommendations, and endorsements.

Book proposal on Matthew Lewis’ Monk recently accepted. It will be part of a series of books that I helped propose: a series of brief monographs (50,000-80,000 word) on Gothic and horror classics. Here are some excerpts from the readers’ reports:1. Indeed, what is particularly exciting about this study is its willingness to confront what the critical tradition to date has largely avoided, that is, the pressing question of The Monk’s relation to the political radicalism of the period. Reading the novel alongside the radical politics of Price, Paine, Godwin, Wollstonecraft and others, Chiu convincingly proposes to recover for contemporary scholars a sense of what it was that so disturbed some of the novel’s original readers and reviewers, from Samuel Taylor Coleridge through to T. J. Mathias and beyond....Exhaustive and historically rigorous in its approach to Lewis’s novel, this study will be a welcome addition to Manchester’s Gothic volumes. With specialist interests in Thomas Paine, political radicalism, Ann Radcliffe and early Gothic writing in general, there is, to my knowledge, no critic who is better placed to write this monograph than Chiu herself.2. This book, if commissioned, will not merely support undergraduate and taught-postgraduate work on a novel which is more often talked about than written upon, but will also likely prove a critical tool to reenergize the debate....As proposed, the structure is logical and friendly to the reader, and the coverage is – as I keep saying – comprehensive. Chapters one and two are commendably full... This, I think, is a distinctive component and will lift the volume out of the ordinary run of critical guides/surveys. Chapter three, incidentally, is monumental – I don’t think I’ve ever come across so much valid data in a single chapter before.... I was especially impressed, incidentally, by the commitment to reviewing culture in Chapter four.

Author Of Textbook (Thomas Paine'S Rights Of Man) For Routledge Guides To The Great Books Series
    Routledge Jul 2013 - Jun 2020
Completed the first full-length textbook on Thomas Paine's Rights of Man (1791-2) in October 2019; published in May 2020. My book begins by surveying the history of the rights and progressive discourse in Britain from the 12th through the late 18th century while also examining Paine's earlier works in the context of this discourse; it shows, for instance, just how radical Common Sense (1776) was when compared to contemporary British and American publications on independence and federalism? Parts 1 and 2 assess the ideas in Rights of Man among earlier and contemporary texts: to what extent was Paine radical in his ideas on suffrage? What might have shaped his rejection of hereditary government and the peerage in Britain, America, and France? How radical were Paine's ideas on republicanism, when compared not only to contemporary writers, but to earlier Republicans like Nedham, Harrington, Sidney? On the welfare state, when compared to contemporary writings on the Poor Law--as well as those of Jeremy Bentham, John Sinclair, and Adam Smith? On the people's role in constitution making, when examined in light of American and British conceptualizations of their respective constitutions? The final chapter examines the critical reception of Rights of Man as well as its lasting legacy in the 21st century where it remains as relevant as ever in a new age of popular democracy and an increased concern with social, political, and economic inequity.
