I successfully defended my dissertation on October 27th, titled "Examining the role of speech-based phonological awareness, phonological recoding, and orthographic processing in deaf bilinguals of ASL and English."I am the primary investigator for the Deaf Eyes Read project, utilizing eye-tracking technology to investigate the role of various aspects of the visual language signal on reading in deaf children. The purpose of this study is to further our understanding of how deaf and hard of hearing learn to read, considering the role of visual language input of American Sign Language, fingerspelling, English mouthing gestures, and vocabulary development of ASL and English. We are currently enrolling deaf signers and typically hearing children ages 10-13 to participate in this study at UT Austin, in Austin Texas. For more information, please contact me!

Through the PhD program at UT Austin, I have had the opportunity to teach my own Introduction to Linguistics course. In this course, I provide students with a general introduction to the scientific study of language. Topics include phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, as well as experimental and theoretically approaches to studying language. I am a clinical research assistant, working in the Labs of Cognitive Neuroscience under PI Dr. Charles Nelson. Here, we study neurodevelopment of children with various developmental disorders. We work with children with autism or at high risk of developing autism, tuberous sclerosis, Down syndrome, and Rett syndrome. Primarily, we conduct neuroimaging via electroencephalography (EEG) and event related potentials (ERP), but we also use fMRI and fNIRS.I am research reliable on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), and trained on various other cognitive assessments, such as the Autism Observation Scale for Infants (AOSI), Mullen Scales of Early Learning, KBIT, CELF, and others. I am also phlebotomy trained, as we collect genetic samples on many of our subjects.

I worked with Dr. Laura Silverman in the parent training clinic for children with Autism at Strong Memorial Hospital. I shadowed Dr. Silverman in clinic, as well as created behavioral supports for the families we saw. These supports included picture exchange communication systems (PECS), token economies, and structure calendars.
