Since completing my Masters in Market Research, I am focussed on building my own company, Meraki Research. Meraki is a Greek word which means, “to do something with soul, creativity or love: when you leave a piece of yourself in your work.” This embodies the ethos of the company. Meraki Research is driven by passion and packaged by individuals who want to make a difference to their clients and build long-standing relationships, centered around trust and common goals. We are a small and specialised team with each individual possessing a unique skill but sharing the same perspective and culture. As a consultant for Incline my responsibilities include project management, client engagement and report delivery on large analytical clients in Johannesburg. This role continues to challenge me to apply my knowledge across a different field and work closely with a highly skilled team of analysts.

As a Research Executive at TMS Research, my responsibilities included running projects for a variety of different clients and managing an internal team. I enjoyed training other colleagues and sharing the knowledge which I gained over the previous four years. I was also involved in bringing in new business and opportunities which was exciting and kept me motivated. There is no challenge too great and no field which we did not explore.

My next move was to a managerial role whereby I was responsible for specific clients and ran their projects from start to finish. This exposed me to many fields, including those outside banking such as mobile networks, non-profit organisations and retail. This taught me to manage a variety of clients as well as an internal team to produce an excellent end result.I was also able to extend my knowledge and capabilities in the areas of qualitative research (specifically in-depth interviews and focus groups), large scale quantitative projects (3000+ nationwide interviews) and secondary research.

Was based on site at FNB Business Banking for two years. Here I worked closely with their marketing team to do their research and produce strategies. This was a turning point in my career and the knowledge I gained was unmeasurable. I was fortunate enough to experience research from a client perspective and see the other side of the industry. I also became exposed to many segments of the bank such as Merchant Services, Insurance, Foreign Exchange, Branch Sales and Operations. I was able to understand the frustrations felt by the client as well as the challenges which they face and how to solve them. Here I learnt how to provide actionable insights and use research as a tool to change business, rather than a tool to write reports which never yield any real value.

Began my research career training as an analyst. Learnt how to do analysis in Excel, SPSS, R and Q. Became familiar with certain market trends, especially in the financial industry.

Upon graduating as an Architectural Technologist, I was employed by a firm in order to gain experience in the industry. I have a passion for beautiful architecture and gained knowledge on different types of construction. Projects which I was involved in included residential houses, shopping malls, warehouses and office space. I also completed urban layouts and construction details during this time.

Part time during studies. Was trained on specific HTC technology and phones in order to provide assistance to clients on behalf of HTC. Gained experience in speaking to customers and helping them resolve technical problems. Sparked an interest in customer relations and satisfaction. Also became aware of the low levels of service which consumers experience in the retail environment.
