A new UK European Pressure Reactor (UK EPR™) is to be constructed at Hinkley Point, on the bank of the Bristol Channel in Somerset. The new power station, Hinkley Point C (HPC) includes two units (two reactors). Each unit is cooled by one pumping station fed by its own intake tunnel. Costain’s scope, with a contract value in excess of £250m, includes the design and construction of all Marine associated works including the heat sink, and cooling water system. This includes the design and installation of an Acoustic Fish Deterrent (AFD) which is to be fixed at each cooling water intake head supplying the UK EPR™, 3km away from shore.My responsibilities as a Design Manager include:•overall responsibility for design development phases of the AFD system, through Optioneering, Concept and Basic Design•managing teams across various locations (Aberdeen, Manchester, Bristol)•liaising with the Client and UK Regulatory bodies to ensure a collaborative approach is taken•Assisting the Project Manager in planning, programming, budgeting, cost controls and reporting
