Matalom, Leyte, Philippines

I was a Coastal Resource Management Volunteer in the Philippines and worked in the Local Government Unit in the municipality of Matalom, Leyte. I participated in and facilitated activities related to conservation, environmental education, and especially coastal resource management. I learned the local language of Cebuano and integrated into the community as an effective ambassador between Filipino and American culture.

Data management and analysis for several research projects all pertaining to the aquatic environment. For example, one project was focused on looking at irradiance data taken in the Red Sea and creating a profile of the different wavelengths present at different depths, then researching in what ways the light was changing in the environment (absorption from particles, phytoplankton, backscatter, etc.), and then creating a model that could be used to analyze the effects of changes in this environment and the effects on the light profile. Knowing this could assist in knowing what light profile corals receive given specific changes in their environment. This work was all done in excel and MATLAB.
