I worked around my studies as Year Abroad Section Editor of the Definite Article, Durham University's student led Modern Languages magazine. I also contributed articles and pictures to the magazine, which I took to an online format, creating a website where we could consistently post content.

In my role as a Senior Campaigns Officer for Hatfield College Welfare Team, I coordinated information, and organised and ran events throughout the year, particularly during specific campaign weeks. Our campaigns included mental health, self image, LGBT issues, and personal safety. During weekly meetings I would help the Welfare Officer, contributing to the agenda and motivating the team.

During my year abroad, I worked in a small school in Italy as an English language assistant for children in years 3 and 3. My job involved preparing material and games for lessons, assisting the teacher in the classroom, helping with pronunciation, verb conjugation and general cultural information about the UK. Whilst there I also undertook private English lessons, creating my own lesson plans and materials to engage the children and make them enthusiastic about learning English.

As part of my degree, my third year was spent abroad. I worked in the school as a teaching assistant in Spanish classes for children from year 1 to year 5. I would help to prepare materials for lessons and took my own groups of children and worked with them during lessons, finding a way to teach them in a way which engaged them and made them excited to learn.. I also had children come and read with me throughout the day.

In my role as a Senior Officer on the Hatfield College Welfare Team, I ran weekly drop in hours, dealing with pastoral issues ranging from homesickness and academic pressure, to sexual assault and bereavement. I was fully trained by the UK organisation Nightline and provided accessible, impartial, trustworthy, and confidential peer support. I also helped to brainstorm and run events during campaign weeks.

Through the Durham Student Community Action group, I worked alongside another student teaching a French lunchtime club to children from the ages of 7-11. We created weekly lesson plans and worked together without input from the teachers to teach the children in a way which engaged them and made them excited to learn.

I worked for six weeks as an au pair to two Spanish children of 7 and 2 whilst their parents worked during the day. Spanish was the main language spoken, with English being spoken only when I was teaching the children.

I managed my own section, worked busy shifts, worked within a team-based culture involving organisation, co-ordination and commitment. This developed my ability to work well within a team to get the most out of them as well as myself.
