In the last decade, populist parties from both left and right have become increasingly electorally popular across southern Europe. The surge of these parties has raised several concerns: opponents have claimed populist parties to be unfit for government, illiberal, and anti-democratic. Nevertheless, Italian and Spanish opponents have primarily treated populist parties mainly 'tolerantly', providing them the same treatment as any other liberal democratic party. Why do opponents diverge in their… Show more In the last decade, populist parties from both left and right have become increasingly electorally popular across southern Europe. The surge of these parties has raised several concerns: opponents have claimed populist parties to be unfit for government, illiberal, and anti-democratic. Nevertheless, Italian and Spanish opponents have primarily treated populist parties mainly 'tolerantly', providing them the same treatment as any other liberal democratic party. Why do opponents diverge in their use of discourse and praxis when it comes to populist parties? In my research, I explored the gap between discourse and praxis in opponents to populist parties in Italy and Spain, focusing on opposition to Podemos and Vox in Spain, Lega and Five Star Movement in Italy. I developed a comparative study aiming at defining patterns, conditions, and outcomes of initiatives opposing populism (IoPPs), producing a total of two book chapters and two peer-reviewed articles.
