Prediction and prevention of risk connected with debrisflows triggered by exceptional precipitation events integrating present geomorphological data and the study of Holocene debrisflow deposits.

The Valdarno Basin is part of the Northern Apennines intermontane basins. The 550 m thick basin fill succession consists of fluvio-lacustrine deposits and it has been subdivided in three main synthems (UBSU), that are, from the lowest: the Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni Synthem, the Montevarchi Synthem and the Torrente Ciuffenna Synthem. Thanks to the many palaeontological, magnetostratigraphic, palynological and chronostratigraphic data collected in the last years, the Valdarno Basin offers a great possibility to define the most important tectono-climatic events that affected the Northern Apennines during the Plio-Pleistocene. The aim of the project is to revise, according to the modern concepts of sequence stratigraphy and facies analysis, the previous models developed for the Valdarno basin on a lithostratigraphic basis. To do this, I have measured many sedimentological logs, to document all the basin fill succession. This work will lead to the definition of facies and facies associations. The vertical succession of the facies associations defined the environments evolution through time, leading to a sequence stratigraphic scheme for the basin. The chronological scanning of the succession have been carried out through the absolute dating of some ash layers. The integration of sedimentological, palinlogical, magnetostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic data allowed the identification of the main tectonic and climatic events in the sedimentary record.
