FG uses mathematical modelling and nanotechnologies to engineer solutions to biomedical problems. The interests of FG comprise: i. The design and fabrication of artificial micro and nano textured surfaces for biological applications and protein sensing. ii. The fabrication of surfaces patterned with micro/nano fabricated themes to guide cells attachment and proliferation. iii. The modification at the micro and nano scales of conductive polymers for advanced Organic Electrochemical OECT devices. iv. The application of mathematical models, numerical models and simulations (DLA) to reproduce the mechanisms of nano-particle formation and grow. In the last few years, v. FG has studied the relation between nano-topography, information and network topology in bi-dimensional grids of nerve cells.FG collaborates and has collaborated with celebrated scientists including Prof. Mauro Ferrari at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Tx, USA. Prof. Enzo Di Fabrizio at the KAUST, Saudi Arabia. Prof. Paolo Decuzzi, Dr. Francesco De Angelis and Dr. Laura Cancedda at the Italian institute of technology in Genova, Italy. Prof. Ciro Chiappini at the King’s College, London, UK. Prof. Christophe Vieu at the Université de Toulouse and CNRS, France. Prof. Bharat Bhushan at the Ohio State University, Oh, USA.In his career, FG contributed to develop super-hydrophobic nano-optics devices for the detection of few molecules; developed nanofabrication methods to produce nano-porous materials for applications in drug delivery, sensing, and theranostics; integrated conductive polymers with nano-scale architectures for the separation and detection of biological species; invented a new lithography technique (Surface Enhanced Thermo-Lithography). Moreover, he used information theory approaches and nano-fabrication techniques to examine how information flows in neural networks cultured on surfaces with controlled topography.
