About Francesco Biondi, Ph.D.

My work examines human-machine interaction in transportation and manufacturing. I leverage my background in cognitive science to understand how attention functions when allocated to multiple activities while driving. I conduct ergonomic assessments of user interfaces, and contribute to the development of adaptive, user-centered systems. I serve as an expert witness in cases involving distracted driving and driver interaction with vehicle technology.

My background in Human Factors and User Experience allows me to understand and measure individuals’ behavior when interacting with automotive interfaces. My current role at the University of Utah involves developing a standardized toolkit and framework for the assessment of vehicles' HMI. Such toolkit (object of a patent application) is used for the assessment of the HMI of a large number of vehicles - different OEM, makes and trim levels. Investigating the User Experience in vehicles with NHTSA level 2 autonomous features and developing new ways to make the user interaction more effective and pleasant for the user represent a major focus of my research. I am also currently involved in researching new methodologies for more accurate Driver Monitoring Systems. Show less
