Managers believe they already do this activity in their every day lifes, they are right, only they could do it with half the effort, and twice the performance.     My research at INSEAD was coached by Prof. Luk Van Wassenhove who was also my PhD supervisor. The work has been around breaking the balanced scorecard process in its varios process steps and studying in detail what are the characteristics of each steps that are essential to the process. Also, I have revisited the balanced scorecard framework to add missing elements. Ultimately the goal was to understand how environmental and social issues could be integrated in top management decision making. I have written one case study transforming a real life consulting experience into a role play. The Case study is published on ECCH. I also have organized a very successful conference in 2003 (350 participants) on the topic of Balanced Scorecard and Environment at INSEAD Forest Reinhardt and Robert Kalan as key note speakers. I have taught in MBA and Executive classes.WHAT DID I LEARNThe reason why companies are not so proactive in environmental and social management is strictly linked to their structural difficulty of working on the medium-long term plan. A well designed facilitated process can both allow the company to reach its strategic goals AND adopt a more sustainable approach to the business.
