About Frances Kai-Hwa Wang

Frances Kai-Hwa Wang is a writer, editor, speaker, poet, and scholar on Asian Pacific American community issues. She has worked in ethnic new media, journalism, education, international development, nonprofit administration, marketing, small business startups, academic philosophy, and more. As one of a handful of voices that has been writing consistently for and about Asian American and Pacific Islander communities for the past twenty years, she brings a unique and intersectional perspective that is able to bridge divides and connect communities to show that we all have much more in common than not. Her ideal position would be as a regular writer or columnist on national race and justice issues, or editor leading an innovative newsroom or team interested in communities of color.She also teaches courses in Asian/Pacific Islander American civil rights law, history, and media at the University of Michigan. She teaches writing at Washtenaw Community College and University of Hawaii Hilo. She is an engaging public speaker and speaks nationally at many universities, conferences, and organizations about Asian American identity, media, and civil rights issues. She also brings nonprofit and small business experience. She has worked for many Asian American nonprofit and civil rights advocacy organizations, including Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce and American Citizens for Justice, the civil rights organization founded after the death of Vincent Chin. She was also an entrepreneur and cofounder and CFO of a small retail business for ten years.
