I am a Florida-based Latin America correspondent for the New York Times. I cover breaking news and file investigative reports about corruption, human rights, law enforcement and social justice. Although I write about the entire region, I specialize in news from Nicaragua, Cuba and Haiti. I have covered the region for more than 25 years, and was recently awarded Columbia University's Maria Moors Cabot prize for my dedication to news out of Latin America.I am leader of our union, the TimesGuild, helping ensure the New York Times is a fair and equitable place to work.My investigation into the shoddy practices of a Brooklyn homicide detective led to the reversals of more than a dozen murder convictions, freeing wrongly convicted men who spent decades in prison. For this work, I won the George Polk award for justice reporting. I spent 19 years at the Miami Herald, where I covered Cuba, was the lead reporter on the Trayvon Martin case and was based in both Nicaragua and Colombia. I was a member of two Pulitzer Prize-winning teams and was a finalist for three more.
