I started volunteering with them when I was 14 and have moved through their different volunteer programs since then. Most recently I have been in the MODEL mentor program. The program is similar to Big Brother and Big Sister, but for children with an incarcerated parent. I have been mentoring my child since 2006 and it has been the most rewarding experience of my life. I was just awarded Mentor of the Year, the highest achievement as a mentor. I am beaming. My little girl wrote a letter to me and it was read at the ceremony. She told me that she wanted to be just like me when she grew up and that she thought of me like a mother. She told me that she can always count on me and I can always make her smile even when that is hard. I choked up on stage as they read the letter. She was the best present anyone has ever given me. She is the real hero. I love you too Danielle.
