As a bilingual clinician with 33 years of service, I am dedicated to ensuring continuous comprehensive personal medical care and have devoted my time to being a leader, change agent, advocate, and influencer in my community. As the Executive Director/CEO of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), my focus has been to bring value to family physician members, demonstrate the importance of family medicine and family doctors in our health care system, and ensure organizational sustainability for our 42,000 members.Speaking at parliamentary and senate committee meetings, I have influenced federal healthcare policy in areas such as Medical Assistance in Dying, Elder Care, and Health & Human Resources Planning. Through the creation of the Besrour Centre for Global Family Medicine, I helped connect family physicians around the globe with a goal of sharing knowledge to create a world where everyone can access quality primary care. Early in my tenure, I led a full governance review of the CFPC and Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine (FAFM) leading to the implementation of smaller, skilled based boards.I have advanced the Patient Medical Home model of care now endorsed in many parts of the country and contributed to major initiatives to bring family medicine training into the future. I actively participated in the review of competency-based education and recommendations for enhancements, and modernization of our examinations. I have also led initiatives to enhance rural recruitment and retention of family physicians and capitalized on opportunities to stimulate research to advance family medicine utilizing multiple data sources. As a leader, I have focused on supporting all family physicians and the patients they serve. As a learning organization, we have taken stock of lessons learned from the pandemic and have decided to become a pan-Canadian employer; and approved the creation of a taskforce committed to ending racism within the organization. As well, I addressed recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission by establishing relationships with Indigenous family physician leaders and supporting the work of the National Consortium on Indigenous Medical Education. During the COVID 19 pandemic, I ensured business continuity by shifting to a virtual workforce, while successfully introducing pandemic resistant administration of examinations, and keeping family medicine leaders and federal government representatives motivated and engaged.
