Works independently to regularly and customarily inspect, test, adjust, calibrate, repair and install all types of system protection and control equipment. Also performs the work required for the installation, maintenance, repair and adjustment of automatic controls and equipment protection devices concerned with the operation of generating equipment as it affects the system, power transformers, transmission systems, distribution systems and customer facilities. Downloads, verifies and troubleshoots logic programming and logic systems on microprocessor relays and specialized substation computing systems. Also responsible for certification of all related wiring, operational checks and taking and evaluating in service test data.

Under the direction of a NERC Certified Transmission Operator, takes or directs any action necessary during normal and emergency conditions to maintain the stability of the electric transmission system.Creates and issues switching and protective tagging orders on the transmission system to place equipment in and out of service.Analyzes each equipment outage request and plans the orderly shutdown of the specific equipment.Coordinates switching and protective tagging orders with interconnected companies.Monitors transmission and substation system using the Energy Management System (EMS) and other tools provided; this includes responding to equipment alarms, monitoring transmission system voltages and power flows.Responsible for developing, reviewing and executing switching procedures to energize new transmission and substation equipment.Reacts to unplanned outages by taking corrective action to restore the transmission system to its normal state, including dispatching necessary workforce to repair the source of the outage.Collaborates in the preparation of reports regarding major outages or system events for management and public relations personnel.Maintains accurate and complete shift log of events that occur during shift, including all normal and emergency operational events, and computer systems hardware/software problems.
