About Francisco Gómez Medina, Phd

As a Research Applications Manager at The Alan Turing Institute, I work with a team of researchers and engineers to develop and apply data-centric engineering methods and tools to real-world problems. I also collaborate with industry partners and stakeholders to identify and deliver innovative solutions that create value and impact.I am also a PhD Candidate at the University of Cambridge, where I conduct cutting-edge research on the effects of digital technology on the product and service lifecycles. My current focus is on how digital twins can be leveraged to improve business model delivery at large engineering companies. I have published multiple papers and presented at international conferences on this topic. My goal is to advance the knowledge and practice of digital twins and organizational learning in the engineering domain.

Advised University spin-offs and startups on potential commercialisation avenues for their technology. Developed a set of recommendations based on evidence from company interviews and secondary research across industries such as Renewables, Oil and Gas and Robotics. These results were finally presented to the directors of the startup and a document detailing the recommendations and industrial contacts was produced.

Led the design of the company's first robot prototype on a bootstrap budget, and built a further five for production. These machines printed in excess of 5000 letters during this time, generating £10k in sales. Led a team of 7 for the design of the second generation prototype until the end of my post.

Bristol Robotics Laboratory Jun 2017 - Aug 2017
EPSRC Internship on the Development of a Monopod Perching NanoquadcopterMonopod perching* allows the quadcopter to balance itself on the monopod while the motors turn at minimal speed. This technology allows for perching on small or uneven surfaces and yawing aboutthe monopod axis for data gathering.Perching times of up to one hour were achieved on a Crazyflie 2.0 nanoquadcopter (theflight time of this quadcopter is 7 minutes). This project was awarded the “Best Summer Internship” prize by the University of Bristol*A monopod is a lightweight rod attached to the quadcopter, perpendicular to the plane onwhich the motors lie, which supports the weight of the quadcopter while perching.
  • Bristol Robotics Laboratory
    Summer Researcher
Bristol Robotics Laboratory Jun 2016 - Aug 2016
EPSRC Internship on Drone Deployment of Intelligent Sensors in Hostile EnvironmentsI devised a sensor deployment mechanism which allowed for multiple removal and placement cycles with no loss in adhesion performance regardless of operating conditions. As an added feature, the sensors could be placed autonomously by the drone on a wireless charging port.
