About Francisco Llauger
I currently work at the Houston Zoo as a Herpetology Keeper. I care for a wide variety of reptiles and amphibians on a daily basis, design and maintain exhibits, administer medications, and help advance the Zoo's conservation mission. As a graduate student, I studied species' responses to environmental change through the lens of ecology and morphological diversity. Specifically, I studied how morphology and distributions are affected by urbanization in Central Texas lizards. My work investigated morphological and distributional differences in lizards at both temporal and spatial scales, leading to a better understanding of how man-made disturbances influence populations. My Master's thesis is published with UT Libraries, and the manuscript of my work is currently under review with the Journal of Herpetology. My educational and professional career has been diverse and rewarding. I have experience in animal husbandry, veterinary medicine, and scientific research at both an undergraduate and graduate level. These experiences required a balance of dedicated work ethic, leadership development, and collaboration. I rose to group leader while working at the zoo, as well as managed the animal care specialist team at a vet clinic. My time as an undergraduate lab researcher required me to lead my peers as a collective unit to carry out experiments, which would later influence my own self management in a graduate setting as I began to design and conduct my own studies. I also implement outreach as a fundamental aspect of my professional goals, an aspect I initially fostered while at the zoo. I volunteer at local scientific outreach establishments have materials for my own educational displays centered around animals and conservation. I also serve as Band Manager for local progressive rock musicians Kenton Place.
