About Franck Vazquez
I received my Ph.D. in Life and Health Sciences in 2004 from the University of Lille. I completed two post-doctoral research projects in Basel and my research group was funded from 2009 to 2013 by the Swiss National Science Foundation. During my research career, I have published a total of 30 papers, which have been cited more than 6000 times.In 2014, I decided to change career to have a broader impact on science and its availability, and, to solve issues relevant to sustainability of scholarly communication.

During my terms as Chief Executive Officer, I have worked closely with MDPI managers to build an international team of talented and dedicated staffs focusing on the common goal of giving the best publishing service possible to the scientific communities. With this goal in mind, we have made outstanding progress:-We have brought MDPI in the top 5 scholarly publishers by the number of articles published monthly (from rank number 18 in April 2016):-We have strengthened and normalized all internal processes, including training system, article production workflow, staff assessment, and compensation,-The number of employees globally increased from 460 to 1240, in offices in Basel (Switzerland), Beijing (China), Wuhan (China), Barcelona (Spain), Belgrade (Serbia).-The number of publication increased by 55.7% on average every year, bringing the total number of articles published by MDPI journals from 70,000 in May 2016 to 227,500 at the end of April 2019.-The total number of journals increased from 150 to 204-The number of journals indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded has doubled (23 in April 2016 to 56 in April 2019)----------------- MDPI journals have published more than 220'000 articles since 1996, of which 23'500 in 2016, 36'000 in 2017, and 64'680 in 2018.During my terms as CEO, MDPI's mission was threefold: 1. Support scholarly communities at large and offer the best publishing experience, be it as an academic editor, as an author, as a reviewer or as a reader2. Bring flexibility and timeliness in the editorial process3. Improve the availability and discoverability of research output to accelerate discoveries and innovations
