Senior Manager Research & Development | Engineering | Italy | Lighting
As Senior Manager R&D I’m leading the engineering group of the European Center of Competence for rear lamps, small exterior lighting and light signalling devices for automobiles and commercial vehicles. Under my direct responsibility there are 66 product development engineers, 4 resources of prototype department and 5 resident external designers. Resources are grouped for their competences in 5 disciplines (mechanics, optics, electronics, CAE and homologations) and assigned to the development of several new programs and the maintenance of all designed products today in production in all regions.
Lighting Division Director
As consequence of an organizational change, Business Unit Light became Lighting Division. Tasks and responsibilities assigned to me are still the same.
Operations Director - Business Unit Light
The position of Operations Director of the Lighting Business Line includes the two following operative functions:- R&D Director of the Lighting Group including mechanical engineering, optical engineering, electronics and innovation, Light Design Application Centre, technical support service and project management;- Chairman of the operative inter-functional workgroup including product and process engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, quality assurance, norms and certifications, cost analysis, product planning, project management and product marketing. Responsibility of the position is to develop, to process and to produce lighting products in line with marketing requirements, at target costs and investments, with expected quality, following time scheduling, in the defined quantities and conform to safety and product certifications needed in the different markets of sale.
Technical Director | Centro Ricerche Plast-Optica
Since January 2012 I've been appointed Technical Director of Centro Ricerche Plast-Optica S.p.A., an Automotive Lighting Company with governative shareholder devoted to applied research in the fields of Injection molding, Optics and Electronics. The position is reporting to CRP CEO and includes the responsibility of human resources, safety, plant, expenses, sales and final economic result of the Company.
Jraum Technical Coordinator
Since September 2011 a JRAUM dedicated to Automotive Lighting is operative in Amaro. Universities of Trieste and Udine signed an Agreement that established the laboratory located inside the facility of AgemontCIT (Amaro). My task as Technical Coordinator for AL of the structure is to identify resources and research items and to promote a collaboration area to cover the reciprocal needs of Automotive Lighting and/or Universities with the support of the other part.
Consultant For International Regulation
Additionally to the responsibility assumed since January 2012 in Centro Ricerche Plast-optica S.p.A., I continued my activity in the automotive lighting and light signaling regulatory field as consultant for Automotive Lighting.
Rear Lamps Innovation Manager (Alri/Inn)
In August 2009 a Rearlamp Innovation function has been estabilished in Automotive Lighting Tolmezzo. I've been appointed responsible of the function with the task to coordinate ALRI (Italian) and ALRF (French) resources devoted to Innovation. Main responsibilities are still: - patents - benchmarking - technological scouting and survey - optical design of “non-conventional” devices - technical marketing Additionally I received the task to identify, hire and train new resources specialized in the area of patents, optical and mechanical design. In September 2010 I also received the task to estabilish close to Tolmezzo a JRAUM (Joint Research Area University Marelli), a research entity dedicated to lighting, following a model of structured and permanent cooperation between Magneti Marelli and Universities already successfully implemented in Torino and Bologna.
International Regulatory Manager
In January 2004 I have been appointed Responsible for Regulations – National and International Affairs. The activity includes the participation to CUNA, GTB, CLEPA and GRE meetings and workgroups.
Head Of Electronic Engineering Rearlamps (Alri/Eeg) And Innovation Manager
In the year 2001, after the exit of Seima Elettronica S.r.l. from the Seima Group, I was appointed Head of Electronic Engineering. This responsibility includes: - management of assigned resources - project management of the sub-parts "electronic components" inside the whole lamp product planning - development of electronic product specifications, compliant to customer requirements - relation with the customer to define carefully electrical lamp-to-vehicle interfaces - definition of detailed electronic product specifications and support to Purchasing Dept. to define and audit possible suppliers - syncronization of the electronic project planning with the whole lamp one - management of pre-series and of electronic product qualification including the link with the logistics and industrialization areas. Additionally to the normal job of electronic product development the responisbility includes also - definition of suitable procedures aligned with lamp product development and industrialization - transversalization of said procedures throughout the Group - definition of continuous improvement strategies for product and process engineering. In the year 2002 Automotive Lighting purchased Seima Group, thus in consequence of an internal re-organization of work I was additionally appointed Responsible for Advanced Research and Technology Innovation of Rearlamps Business Unit Europe, with the mission of coordinating the activities of research in Italy, France, Spain and the relations with Centro Ricerche Plast-optica, as well as of activating the possible sinergies with the Headlamps Business Unit. Optical Simulation And Design Engineer
Due to the growing importance of simulation in rear lamp design, in February 1998 I gained admission – as Optical Engineer – to the Product Development Department, where I participated in a training in CATIA. Joining the knowledge of 3D design and ASAP software, I became an important link between mechanical and optical design. Main competences of this role are: - optical design of lighting and light signalling devices (optical elements generated in CATIA 3D-modeling environment); - validation of said design through photometrical simulation (ASAP software from Breault Research Organization) - characterization of transmittance and reflectance proprieties of materials and definition of optical parameters to be used inside simulation software - verification of alignment of results of the simulations with statistical optical behaviour of physical off-tools and off-process parts - tuning of simulation parametes to close the gap between simulations and real parts.
Researcher
I worked as researcher in the Research Center of Seima Italiana, where I contributed to the development of the program on the diffraction and on the replication of microstructures by injection moulding. Over that period I also started to work with simulation programs for optical design (ASAP) and I studied the problems related to injection moulding of thermoplastic materials, particularly of their surface topology and treatments (paint, metal coating) and related scattering models. I studied colorimetry, spectrum-photometry, light sources such as incandescent bulbs, discharge bulbs (low pressure) and LEDs.
