Context: Swiss e-commerce platform, over 100M CHF revenue in 2023 (top 10 Switzerland), B2CRole: In the IT Backend team, and jointly with other teams, I play an active part in the ever-going evolution and day-to-day operation of the base platform for the DeinDeal.ch and My-Store.ch websites and mobile apps.Tech stack: Magento/OpenMage, PHP, Node.js, MySQL, Elasticsearch, Azure Cache for Redis, NATS.io,...Some achievements:Designed and deployed a technical architecture enabling asynchronous processing- Aim: Guarantee the completion of critical non-urgent processes w/o impacting the user experience, in near real-time and in a resilient way regarding the availability of remote servers- Main elements: Message-oriented middleware (NATS), message formatting with Protobuf, home-made PHP/Magento framework, tailor-made Node.js applications- Monitoring: Logs, metrics, dashboards, alerts (with New Relic, PagerDuty, Healthchecks.io)Conducted the move from a self-hosted session storage (Memcached) to the cloud (Redis in Azure)- Aim: Leverage team skills on Redis, reduce maintenance costs, enable easier resource scaling- Main challenges: Avoid regression, keep in line with perf standards, maintain ongoing sessions, ensure a progressive ramp-upConducted the migration from Magento to OpenMage- Aim: Optimize security and perf, allow for PHP/MySQL version upgrades- Main challenges: Avoid regression, decide b/w community and custom code, lead the transition as evolutions are being implemented by the teamUsual tasks:- Support Backend team members and other teams (ERP, Web Frontend, Mobile Apps, QA)- Collaborate with SRE on: - Software upgrades (NATS, PHP, MySQL) - Deployment procedures and activities (DevOps) - Dev/staging environments - Resource sizing according to perf and availability requirements- Monitor applications and dbs- Assess and fix critical and/or complex bugs- Review and optimize code- Design & implement critical features
