About Fran Fried
Well, I've had a pretty interesting life and career. I'm a broad and deep generalist in a world of specialists. I've been an editor and writer, both print and online, for media outlets on both sides of the country, as well as a globally renowned graduate school at one of the world's most prestigious universities. I've also edited books, and written PR copy for nonprofits and small businesses. I host an online radio show and have years of terrestrial radio experience as well. I've written op-ed pieces for The New York Times (online) and the New Haven Register about gender/diversity matters, and participated in a panel discussion on trans matters for an international financial institution. I have my own blog. I edited/mentored writers from 40-year veterans to high school students from a wide range of backgrounds. I was a music writer for 20 years and interviewed so many legendary performers, you'd swear I was a shameless name-dropper. I was once a sportswriter who had the Hartford Whalers as a beat. I've narrated one documentary and appeared in two others. I've sung on tribute albums. And I also participated in one of the most epic games in the history of "Jeopardy!" And one day, I'll finish my book.GOALS: I simply want to use my lifetime of skills in the name of a worthwhile cause and make a decent living doing it. I would also like to leverage my life experiences into more diversity & inclusion speaking for businesses and/or schools. And I'm interested in voiceover work.SPECIALTIES: Telling stories; Editing/headline writing (AP and Chicago styles); writing for print and for blogs (on WordPress); excellent written and verbal communication; knowledge of LGBT issues (especially the T); managing and coaching writers; basic HTML; pagination; photo selection/editing/cropping; coordinating with other departments; planning/organizing/meeting deadlines; collaborating; broadcasting; public speaking; deep knowledge of music; broad general knowledge.https://franoramaworld.wordpress.com/online-portfolio/

Freelance Copywriter, Copy Editor, Literary Assistant, Voiceover Talent
Current* I proofed, edited and wrote copy (news releases, newsletter stories, Web copy) as a freelancer for the Office of Communications at the Yale School of Public Health (November 2020-April 2022). I was entrusted with editing two major projects in Spring 2021: a 273-page self-evaluation report for the school's re-evaluation process; and the inaugural issue (64 pages) of Focus, the school's in-house magazine.* I've written and edited publicity copy for arts events, performers, nonprofits and small businesses. Projects have included the New Haven (CT) Documentary Film Festival (2019-20), a world-class festival that has drawn the likes of Michael Moore, Peter Davis, and D.A. Pennebaker & Chris Hegedus; events at Best Video & Cultural Center (Hamden, CT); Andiamo Tours, a one-woman Italy tour company (Hamden, CT); New Mystery Girl, an Austin, TX-based garage band of national scope (including a Coolest Song in the World on Sirius XM's Underground Garage Channel); and Hair Again, a hair-restoration clinic (Fresno, CA). I've also hosted Q&A sessions at the New Haven Documentary Film Festival (2019-20).* I've provided voiceovers for videos for Andiamo Tours, and for TCI Mobility, a Pompano Beach, FL, company that outfits vans for medical transport (and also had a part in writing the copy). Previously, I narrated "The High School That Rocked!" (2017), a documentary about a Connecticut high school (Staples High, Westport) that brought in concerts by several major rock acts in the '60s and '70s.* I've copy-edited two books; one, "The Complete Book of Dreams" by Stephanie Gailing (Wellfleet Press/The Quarto Group), was published in 2021.* I translated hundreds of hours of interviews for two authors working on a massive oral history project; publication date TBA.
Diversity Writer/Columnist/Public Speaker/Consultant
Current* I was a panelist on "Transgender Perspectives," a virtual diversity panel discussion on trans matters and economics, which was presented for worldwide employees of UBS as part of the bank's diversity efforts (Nov. 18, 2020). Other panelists included Charlotte Clymer, former rapid response spokeswoman for the Human Rights Campaign; and Carl Charles, a staff attorney who works with trans matters for Lambda Legal. Paul Donovan, UBS' global chief economist, moderated.* I've written opinion pieces on gender identity that have been published in The New York Times (online, May 2015) and the New Haven Register (online and print, May 2015, June 2011).* I consulted with the William Floyd School District (Mastic Beach, NY), an 8,700-student district in southern Suffolk County, Long Island, on ways to better accommodate transgender students (October 2015).* I've spoken to groups and classes (about gender identity and other matters) at Capital Community College, Hartford, CT; Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY; the Unitarian Society of New Haven, Hamden, CT; and Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, CT.
Online Radio Dj
CurrentI'm the host of Franorama 2.0, a music show airing from 1-4 p.m. ET Thursdays on a Connecticut-based online radio station. My music runs the gamut of whatever nooks and crannies and crevices I have in the memory banks of my brain – new talent, Brian Wilson, early punk, garage ('60s to latter-day), Northern soul/Stax/Motown/beach music, the '60s girl group sound, doo-wop, pop from several decades, '70s cheese, old standards, goofball stuff. I like to think of it as my own personal top-40 station from a parallel universe. If it has a heartbeat and sounds good, it belongs.
Writer/Editor
CurrentI'm the creator of the Wordpress blog Franorama World – the wild, woolly world of someone navigating two humongous life changes at once. (Do not try this at home, even under adult supervision. Even if you're a Gemini like me and feel perfectly qualified to live in two worlds at once.) Like its creator, the blog is a smorgasbord of diversity, from the humorous to the dead-serious, from album and movie reviews to gender matters to unemployment to the occasional Leonard Maltin-style dead-person tribute to the uncategorizable. And she has a lovely personality ...
Nonprofit Radio Dj
CurrentIn PKNspeak, I'm a "programmer," a volunteer deejay at a 10,000-watt community station serving most of Connecticut and parts of Long Island and suburban New York City. Before my move to California in 2004, I hosted a regular Friday overnight show (2-6 a.m.) called "The Sleep Deprivation Experiment" for 11 1/2 years and a Friday morning drive show (6-10 a.m.) called "Franorama" for a year and a half. Since then, I've done fill-in shows, as well as my annual run-through of "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" on Jeff Day's Christmas show (where I perform several voices, including Yukon, Hermey, Santa and the female characters).
Staff Writer/Associate Communications Officer
I put my adulthood of skills as an editor and writer to good use for a worthwhile cause – by showcasing some of the excellent things that scientists, students and staff did at one of the top public health schools in the country. I wrote and edited stories and news releases; compiled items for a 6-times-yearly internal newsletter; wrote copy for Web pages; coordinated with our Web and social media people to give stories the best play possible; and occasionally wrote scripts and shepherded biweekly appearances by the former dean on the noon newscast of the local TV station..
Movie Guide Editor, Listings Editor
* Working for an entertainment conglomerate, I was part of a team that built and maintained websites for cinemas around the world. (It's the company's bread-and-butter.) I ensured that our information (film release dates, venues, ratings, assets such as posters, synopses for foreign-language countries) was accurate and up-to-date. I was responsible for information for 8-12 countries any given week.* I was part of a team that compiled and maintained a massive events database for use by media outlets and websites. I was responsible for gathering, editing and posting listings for nine markets in the U.S. and Canada.
Music News Writer (Stringer)
I filled in as a music news writer for the Entertainment News department of ABC News Radio, based at ABC's New York headquarters. I found stories via media websites and press releases and rewrote the information on the company's proprietary CMS into short stories (300 words max) for use on both the ABC News website and in broadcasting copy. I also embedded the links from the original sources.
Northeast Design Hub Deputy
I assisted the director of Digital First Media's Northeast Region design hub, which paginated (electronically laid out) pages for 10 dailies -- three in Connecticut (New Haven Register, The Middletown Press, The Register Citizen of Torrington), four in New York state (The Record of Troy, The Saratogian of Saratoga, The Daily Freeman of Kingston and The Oneida Daily Dispatch), one in Massachusetts (The Berkshire Eagle of Pittsfield) and two in Vermont (The Bennington Banner, The Brattleboro Reformer) -- plus several weeklies. I paginated approximately 20 pages nightly (including one or two A1s), using SaxoTech, a CMS that incorporated Adobe InDesign and InCopy. I also proofed the pages of 2-3 papers a night and, for the Connecticut papers, sent the pages to the Hartford Courant pressroom, where they were printed. Our hub also served as de facto copy editors for the papers, as we were the last line of defense, and we caught a lot of errors, be they style or grammatical or factual.
Copy Editor
I edited copy (on a contract basis, through Aquent) for a fast-paced major news website. I reviewed both breaking stories and ones that were published overnight, checked for spelling, punctuation and grammar/usage (AP and MSN styles), and improved headlines when needed.
Copy Editor
I edited stories (rim/slot) for one of California's largest newspapers. Edited and trimmed copy, wrote headlines, pitched in wherever needed. I also uploaded staff news stories to the paper's website -- imported stories and accompanying art, ensured the HTML coding was correct and prioritized the stories on the page.
Copy Editor (Freelance)
I edited stories on a freelance basis for the print and online editions of a national news magazine that primarily ran academic research-based stories on finding solutions to social and environmental concerns. I fact-checked, checked for spelling and grammar, looked for holes in stories, ensured hyperlinks were correct and found appropriate hyperlinks when needed.
Assistant Features Editor/Night Sports Editor
* I edited feature writers -- general assignment, the Home & Garden writer, the Faith & Values writer and our Tuesday Life columnist. I also selected the secondary stories for the cover and sat in on weekly story budget meetings with each writer. I also uploaded daily staff feature stories to the paper's Web site, prioritizing stories and art and making sure the HTML coding was correct; I later taught the features copy desk to do it.* I was also editor of BackTalk, the back page of the Sunday features section, written by local high school students. I worked with a staff of over 20 young freelancers, planning stories, coordinating art with the illustrator and photo assignment editor, coaching the writers and editing them. I also worked with local high school writers at the annual summer journalism camp at Fresno State.* From Nov. 2008-March 2009, I was also the night sports editor two nights a week. I oversaw a 6-page sports section, managed workflow, slot-edited stories, watched out for and made editorial decisions on late-breaking stories, coordinated with page designers, wrote some heads and cutlines and sent most of the pages to prepress.
Entertainment Editor/Music Writer
I produced the Weekend section (24-40-page tabloid) for Fridays (layout, compiling the calendars, consulting with graphics and photo departments); also wrote the cover feature story, a pop music column, the Best of Weekend items and occasional album reviews. Interviewed hundreds of artists, from music legends to up-and-coming acts. Also wrote features for the Life/Styles section.
Freelance Album Reviewer
I wrote several 150-word album briefs and occasional 750-word album profiles for the now-late, great Phoenix.
Sports Writer, Music/Entertainment Writer, Intern
* I was the entertainment writer for a small-to-mid-circulation daily: I freelanced album reviews and a weekly club column (1984-90) before the job became full-time (Jan. 1990-Aug. 1992). Among other things, I wrote features on pop music (national and local acts) and some of the country's most noted regional theater companies (Hartford Stage, Yale Repertory Theatre, Long Wharf Theatre).* I was on the sports staff for 6 years (Dec. 1983-Jan. 1990): I covered the Hartford Whalers hockey beat (1987-90); Waterbury Indians baseball (Cleveland Indians' Class AA team, 1985-86); Curtis Cup golf (U.S. amateur women vs. Great Britain & Ireland, Sandwich, England, 1988); occasional New York Giants, New York Jets, New York Mets and New York Yankees games; and high school sports. In addition, I laid out the section and edited most of the copy 2-3 times a week.* I served two Internships, splitting my time between the Features and Sports desks (May-Aug. 1982, May-Nov. 1983).
