As engineer with Holland America Line you are responsible for the safe operation, maintenance and the constant continuation of the ship. These cruise ships are practically small floating villages that provide the guests of all the comforts and needs one would have at home. But compacted into a, relatively, small steel superstructure. Working on such a ship, together with the entire technical department, i am responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of a wide variety of machinery. As the engine room and its systems are enormous. These systems are divided into different "responsibilities" among the engineering team (e.g. the main engines, the boilers/steam, waste systems, safety systems etc.). Upon joining the ship for a contract you are given one of these responsibilities to care for. Including, but not limited to, your duties and responsibilities of the assigned systems is the planning and executing of maintenance. Ordering of spare parts and ensuring sufficient stock remains on board for unplanned occurrences. Internal and external communication regarding the systems of your responsibility. Ensuring compliance to all international regulations. Watchkeeping of the engine room plant and making watch-rounds.Watchkeeping (operator) of the engine room plant is done via an automated system (ABB) from the engine control room. All the process parameters that are coming in from the plant are monitored and controlled from here. The second part of watchkeeping is finding and reacting to faults, during your watchkeeping rounds. Good communication between team members and the available knowledge is key to a well operated engine room.During maintenance hours we execute preventative and corrective maintenance in order to ensure the safe continuation of the ship's itinerary. As an engineer working with such a wide variety of systems and people I have gained a lot of experience working together as a team.

At P&O Ferries I preformed maintenance and repair of a wide range of machinery. This included working on Diesel Engines (Wärtsilla), centrifugal pumps, high voltage/medium voltage maintenance, working with automated engine control systems (ABB Kongsberg), purifiers etc. Besides maintenance there was the duty of Watch-keeping and ensuring the continuïty of all the engineroom systems.
