About Frank Dean

Biographical SketchIn the fall of 2015 the University of Texas Pan American became the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Frank B. Dean joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Texas Pan American in 2009. He feels lucky to have had the opportunity to work with Thomas Slaga on steroid binding to the estrogen, androgen, and glucocorticoid receptors, and he continues this work in his present position. He was employed at Replidyne, Inc. from 2002 until 2008. At Replidyne he developed a high-throughput screen for inhibitors of S. aureus DNA replication, carried out preclinical pharmacokinetic studies, and wrote sections for IND and NDA applications. From 1999 to 2002 he was employed at Molecular Staging, Inc., where he developed methods for 100,000-fold amplification of plasmid and genomic DNA. He received his A.B. degree in biochemistry from Harvard University in 1978, where he worked in the laboratory of Charles C. Richardson, and purified the bacteriophage T7 single-strand DNA binding protein. In 1979 he worked for Richard D. Kolodner on plasmid recombination in E. coli. He received his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1984 from The University of Chicago under Nicholas R. Cozzarelli, where he studied the mechanism of DNA strand passage by DNA topoisomerase I. His postdoctoral work was carried out at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in the laboratory of Jerard Hurwitz, where he described the mechanism for the initiation of SV40 virus DNA replication. At Rockefeller University, in the laboratory of Mike O’Donnell, he uncovered the genes for one of the human DNA repair/cell cycle checkpoint pathways. Frank has 46 scientific publications and eight U.S. patents. He cloned 23 cDNA and STS sequences, which have been deposited in Genbank.Specialties: Pharmacokinetic Studies Preparation of Regulatory Submissions Assay Development DNA Replication and AmplificationMolecular Virology and OncologyEnzyme Purification Molecular Genotyping
