Department Head Digital Production Technologies 2003 – 2007Managed a staff of 10 dedicated to the prepress electronic processing of all 70+ Penton print magazines. Managed budget, personnel, capital expenditures and technology to deliver press ready PDF-X1A documents to our print vendor. Oversaw customer relations, vendor contracts, project management, employee performance, training and development.• Decreased net department expense 5 consecutive years by continuous process improvement and value stream analysis, while still providing staff merit-based salary increases.• Improved employee morale by team building and partnering, resulting in only a single staff member loss over 5 years.• Spearheaded department software and process improvement initiatives that eliminated an over print issue that had cost the company over $120K/year.• Managed consumable supply contract to reduce cost from over $80K to ~$20K/year.• Leveraged productivity gains to expand department services to include web updates (reuse of print content online) without increasing staff. In Print Development 2001 – 2003Wrote desktop, Web, and application extensions to support and improve print and Internet operations. Delivered ORIS production workflow, a program which automated many print production tasks. Supported and standardized in print functions in Penton offices nationwide and developed a low cost SWOP approved proofing service.Electronic Development Manager 1997 – 2001Launched Penton’s first Web sites and interactive CD’s. Wrote Perl CGI Scripts, maintained user registration databases. Created digital video/audio presentations. Led disaster recovery program.• In 1995, Penton Media’s Cleveland location was destroyed by water. The building was so badly damaged that we were not able to reoccupy it for over a year. Nearly all desktop computer equipment was destroyed. The disaster recovery plan was implemented resulting in not a single print magazine missing publication despite the scale of the disaster. Total data loss was limited to the designed specification (No more than one day data loss).
