Prepare Don’t Despair (preparedontdespair.org) has focused its efforts on rebuilding the Main Streets in rural and as well as urban cities. These once prosperous and booming main streets have been abandoned and left to deteriorate. The people left in these areas experience high rates of unemployment, crime, experience high incarceration and drop-out rates, have little workforce readiness, face drug abuse, live in sub-standard housing, face chronic health conditions and poverty. Overall they have a poor quality of life.This area became a highlight to the world with the events in Ferguson and Baltimore. The riots spurred on by the deaths of a few black men stirred up of decades of pent-up frustration and lack of opportunity. If resources and a pathway to success are not provided, social unrest could become the norm. A pathway to success will be mapped out with initiatives in Health, Arts, Learning, and Finances. Prepare Don’t Despair’s Main Street revitalization challenge is to create economically and ecologically self-sustaining communities that thrive. Our goal is to produce SWAG (a colloquial word for “cool, fashionable and modern”) to troubled areas and disadvantaged groups of people. SWAG Zones for youth -Students Wholehearted about Achievement and Goals will be set up for greater success. SWAG for adults will focus on transforming blighted areas and restoring the luster of Main Street with lively shopping, residential, light industry, markets, dinning & entertainment, and education zones.
