Dr James is involved in teaching, research and medical care in a variety of settings both in the US and abroad. He works mainly in public health with a focus on disease prevention and health promotion but also provides primary care. He has ongoing projects in East Timor, Taiwan, Nepal and India. He is involved in service learning education of undergraduates and medical students in both the US and Taiwan. As Clinical Associate Professor of Health Services at University of Washington's School of Public Health and as Adjunct Professor of Global Health in the Dept of Surgery at Yang Ming University in Taipei and as a lecturer in Interdisciplinary Studies at Fairhaven College/WWU he leads students in projects in developing countries that usually combine service, learning and research. In the US he is the Health Officer for both San Juan County (off the coast of Washington State in the Salish Sea) and the Nooksack Indian Tribe. He is also active in medical practice both in a general primary care and in a specialty clinic for those that travel abroad-- Travel Medicine Northwest in Bellingham WA (halfway between Seattle Wa and Vancouver BC.
