Dr. Lan is a Principal Water Resources Engineer with more than 30 years of successful experience in the application of surface water and groundwater hydraulic/hydrologic (H&H) analysis and modeling to the planning and design in various water resources projects for international and domestic clients. His expertise includes multi-dimensional hydraulic analysis/modeling, hydrologic analysis/modeling, hydraulic structure design (in particular spillway), sediment transport and river engineering, dam break analysis, floodplain delineation, mitigation and management, stormwater planning and modeling, urban drainage design, alluvial geomorphology, water management modeling, and statistical analysis. Dr. Lan is best known for his extensive experience in applying numerical models to various water resources applications. He is an expert in applying 3D CFD models to solve complex hydraulic problems in the design of dam and spillways, pump stations, intakes and outlets, mixing tanks/ponds, and others and has clients from the states (USACE, USBR, USFWS, NRCS, local governments, etc.) and other countries (Australia, Spain, Argentina, Canada). He is experienced with numerous surface and subsurface flow and sediment transport models, such as FLOW-3D, Ansys CFX, Fluent, SRH-2D, FLO-2D, HEC models (HEC-1, 2, 5, 6, RAS, HMS, ResSim), GSTAR-3, FEQ, DAMBRK, FLDWAVE, GoldSim, TAB2, RMA2, FESWM, SED2D, RMS, SWMM, HSPF, MIKE-11, MODFLOW, MODPATH, PATH3D, MT3D.Recent highlighted projects include:. Gross Dam Spillway Design, Denver, Colorado. Lead engineer to conduct CFD and physical modeling for the design of an unprecedented steep (0.5H:1V) stepped emergency spillway and its energy dissipation basin for the raised dam (470 ft tall). . Mosul Dam, Mosul, Iraq. Lead engineer o conduct CFD models to evaluate alternative to remediate scour conditions downstream of the lower outlet structure and to other hydraulics in the power intakes. . Los Vaqueros Dam Emergency Spillway and Outlet Hydraulic Evaluation, CA. Lead hydraulic engineer to perform CFD modeling for the proposed new spillway and high-level outlet work that share the same downstream chute, which would save millions for the project. . Hinze Dam Stage 3 Enhancement, Queensland, Australia. Lead Hydraulic Engineer to develop 3-D CFD to help finalize the design of the fish trap/ladder as part of the Hinze Dam enhancement project.
