In February 1984, I left another law firm in Birmingham, AL to become a founding attorney at Maynard Cooper & Gale. Three years later, I was elected Shareholder in 1987. As a specialist in the Public Finance Group, I developed broad experience as bond counsel and disclosure counsel in a wide variety of transactions for the State of Alabama and numerous local governmental entities, investment banking firms, universities and colleges and private enterprises seeking economic development incentives. I have handled both tax-exempt and taxable financings for governmental and private activity projects.I also served as special legislative and tax advisor to the Director of Finance of the State of Alabama. In that role, I drafted major legislation and constitutional amendments affecting state government financing and negotiated economic development incentives on behalf of the State of Alabama, including American Honda Motor Co., Inc.; Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc.; and Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, L.L.C. I served as general counsel of the Birmingham Airport Authority since its inception in 1986 until my retirement in 2019, and also served as principal outside counsel to the Alabama Housing Finance Authority, beginning in 1999.After 35 years at Maynard Cooper, I decided to retire on July 1, 2019 in order to pursue my passion for nonprofit work for various organizations, including Alabama Appleseed, Impact America and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In May 2020, I began writing a daily newsletter on Substack which discussed the latest news and commentary on the Covid-19 epidemic.
