I am a biophysical chemist working to solve complex problems at the molecular scale that require an interdisciplinary approach and strong physical perspective. I have extensive experience in the fabrication and use of model membranes, including vesicles, supported lipid bilayers, monolayers, and nanotubes. I also have extensive experience analyzing soft materials and biological systems with cryo-EM, imaging mass spectrometry, fluorescence microscopy, the Langmuir-Blodgett trough, spectroscopic techniques, light scattering, mass spectrometry, and calorimetry.

Associate Staff ScientistSlac National Accelerator Laboratory Feb 2021 - Sep 2022Menlo Park, California, UsI studied the structure and dynamics of biological macromolecules using a variety of experimental tools, including time-resolved serial femtosecond crystallography at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). I supported user experiments at the Coherent X-ray Imaging (CXI) and Macromolecular Femtosecond Crystallography (MFX) beam lines of the LCLS and pursued my own scientific interests in membrane structure. -
Jane Coffin Childs Postdoctoral FellowUniversity Of California, San Francisco Oct 2018 - Feb 2021San Francisco, California, UsSupervisor: Adam Frost.I used cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryoEM) and other techniques in membrane biophysics and physical chemistry to investigate the mechanisms of ESCRT-mediated membrane fission. -
Fellow Of The Center For Molecular Analysis And Design (Cmad)Stanford University Apr 2016 - Sep 2018Stanford, Ca, UsSupervisors: Steven G. Boxer and Noah Z. BurnsI initiated a project with the Burns Lab and successfully obtained funding to leverage the power of organic synthesis to answer questions in membrane biophysics and biology. I focused on elucidating the self assembly and biological functions of noncanonical lipids that were accessible only through total synthesis. -
Graduate Research AssistantStanford University Sep 2012 - Sep 2018Stanford, Ca, UsSupervisor: Steven G. BoxerThesis: Nanoscale Membrane Structure: From Lateral Organization to Proton PermeabilityI studied the lateral distribution and co-localization of membrane components using nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (nanoSIMS) imaging and fluorescence microscopy. In order to enable these studies, I developed labeling strategies and chemical syntheses to introduce stable-isotope labels into lipids and proteins. I also investigated the physical properties and biological functions of non-canonical lipids. -
Graduate Teaching AssistantStanford University Sep 2012 - Jun 2013Stanford, Ca, UsI taught the organic chemistry lab course, biochemistry, and the senior biophysics seminar. In the lab course, I instructed groups of ~20 students on organic synthesis and characterization, as well and lab safety. In biochemsitry, I managed a course of ~150 students. My duties included administering exams, grading exams and homework, and holding office hours. Finally, I led a biophysics seminar for ~15 senior chemistry majors. The seminar was organized as a twice-weekly discussion based on the primary literature. -
Undergraduate ResearcherVanderbilt University Sep 2009 - Sep 2012Nashville, Tennessee, UsSupervisor: Darryl J. BornhopI studied biomolecular interactions with a novel technique called backscattering interferometry (BSI). I focused on designing binding assays to elucidate mechanisms of actions for various systems, including PKA, COX-2, LSD1, LPAR1. I also worked on optimization of BSI instrumentation to improve sensitivity and reproducibility of measurements.
