During the last 16 years I have been with AIG based in Perth Australia and Bangkok Thailand, I have been involved in conducting property and business critical risk assessments for a wide range of commercial and industrial operations such as chemical plants, mining sites, petrochemical and refineries in Australia, Asia, Europe, North and South America. Provided loss control advice to clients and insurance underwriters. Also engaged in the evaluation and reporting on loss control aspects for surveyed sites and recommending proposals for improving risks.

I spent an additional 6 years in Ireland in the area of integrated pollution control (IPC) licensing for complex and environmentally challenging industrial installations. Provided assessments and advice on technologies for environmental control at major mining and industrial installations. Also engaged in environmental licensing, enforcement and auditing of large scale industrial facilities. Evaluated/assessed potential environmental impacts of new resource based operations and industrial installations. Prepared technical reports and technical guidelines regarding licensing of large scale activities (mining/quarrying/industrial). Participated in the development of an inspection manual for use by environmental inspectors in all European Union countries.

In Canada served 5 years in the process industry as a process/development engineer followed by 8 years of developing environmental legislation for wastewater discharges from the inorganic chemical industry in Ontario. Author of a published Environment Ministry 12 Month Effluent Monitoring Data Report and a background report on the development of the Effluent Monitoring Regulation for Ontario’s Inorganic Chemical Industry. Also author of three published Environment Ministry position papers on specific issues related to proposed effluent limits regulations and a draft Environment Ministry background report on the development of the Effluent Limits Regulation for Ontario’s Inorganic Chemical Industry. Conducted best available technology (BAT) reviews for wastewater treatment on a world-wide basis with particular emphasis on U.S. installations, pollution prevention techniques and zero discharge options.

Process engineer for an ammonia nitrate, urea and nitric acid manufacturing facility. Duties included initiating and developing cost reduction ideas, updating operation procedures, providing technical support during equipment and plant start-ups, conducting Hazard and Operability Reviews for plant modifications, commissioning new equipment and co-ordinating and conducting non-routine operating efficiencies for production departments.
