My fourth book, The Psychoanalytic Vision: The Experiencing Subject, The Transcendence, and the Therapeutic Process, won the Gradiva Award for the best psychoanalytic book of 2013. The thesis is that the philosophical foundation of psychoanalysis is phenomenology and that by using phenomenological concepts, a view of psychoanalysis emerges that divests the field of all reifications and any residue of natural science influence. Basing psychoanalysis on the experiencing subject continues, expands, and transforms the trends of contemporary psychoanalysis. Carrying through in a consistent manner the awareness that psychoanalysis is about subjectivity leads to a reconceptualization of some fundamental psychoanalytic concepts, such as "the unconscious," a term used by even the most contemporary of analysts. I show both the clinical implications of this way of thinking about analysis and the consequences for how psychoanalysis is situated in contemporary culture. My other three books are explications of object relations theories and their application to the psychoanalytic process. Object Relations Theories and Psychopathology: A Comprehensive Test surveys the major object relations theories in detail to show the specific clinical implications of each theory. My second book, Transcending the Self: An Object Relations Model of Psychoanalytic Therapy, explicates my own model in detail, and my third book, Self Creation: Psychoanalytic Therapy and the Art of Possibility focuses on the translation of understanding into the creation of a new self.My other three books and my psychoanalytic papers and workshops are on object relations theory and its implications for the conduct of psychoanalytic therapy. In my view, the evolution of object relations theories and its contemporary iteration in relational theory lead organically to the view of psychoanalysis adumbrated in The Psychoanalytic Vision.
