In the pursuit, I gained a wide knowledge of detector development, working with both classical vacuum based radiation detectors and new semiconductor based detectors. I also gained extensive experience in the readout of electronics and data analysis techniques which included machine learning techniques. I also gained extensive experience on the simulation of these detectors with the GEANT4 toolkit, having performed the simulation of several detectors which were then later constructed based on the insights gained from the simulations. I have also had much experience in the supervision of undergraduate students which undertook final year projects with the nuclear group. This rangedfrom guidance in the lab and with analysis and simulation to giving advice on report writing and helping students engage with the field and find a subject which they connected with. I also had extensive experience of organising and participating in outreach activities, such as school visits and preparations for events such as Explorathon. I was also actively involved in the development of outreach activities within the group, which will contribute to not only our ongoing outreach portfolio, but will lead to an outreach package which will be part of the International Nuclear Physics Conference 2019, hosted by our institution as well as several master class like events leading up to this big event. Research Assistant
During my time as a research assistant, I was involved in the design of a muon detector, which used absorption to image voids within a steel structure. To this end, simulations were performed using Geant4 as well as circuit design and simulation using PSpice. I was also involved in the supervision of two final year project students. This involved guidance in both simulation and practical lab work as well as analysis of simulated data and providing feedback on report writing.
