The Pacific County ARC meets at the Hunters Inn in Naselle, WA at 9AM on the second Saturday of each month. Membership is open to anyone interested in Amateur radio.

WWARA is the nationally recognized Amateur Radio Repeater Coordinator for Western Washington State.Leading the process of conversion from a paper-based to a web-based application and renewal process for repeater coordination. Leading the incorporation of narrow-bandwidth communications.Led the opening of new channel pairs for Narrow-Band/Digital systems on the 2-meter and 70-centimeter Amateur Bands. This is a highly controversial move within the field, but necessary with the popularity of newer, non-compatible radio systems coming along.

Radio was a one-man department, working directly for the Master. As a Radio Officer, I stood a watch, 8 hours out of every 24 hours at sea. I used Morse code, Radio-Teletype, 2-way voice radio, as well as satellite text, data and telephone to handle message traffic, both civilian and military (including classified). My work included clerical ship's office and accounting. As an Electronics Technician I ordered, installed, fabricated, modified, maintained, repaired, and usually operated, everything electronic on board. I trained new mates on the bridge systems and computers, and got a good deal of overtime in and around the Engine Room working on electrical problems. I worked on three ships, MV Lawrence H Gianella, MV Samuel L Cobb, and USNS Richard G Matthiesen, remaining Senior Permanent REO on the last one for over 12 years. I hold Commercial Radiotelephone (GROL), Commercial Radiotelegraph (T2) and GMDSS Operator and Maintainer Licenses, all endorsed for Ship Radar. Designed, constructed, maintained and dismantled on-site power distribution system for a construction project employing 600 workers. Directly supervised 3-5 others. Orientation of new electrical workers. Only person on site that worked with live power, 125VAC to 512VAC.

Leadman (foreman) supervising electrical termination crew of 12 or more. Duties included mounting and circuit terminations of instrumentation, lighting, power and high voltage (to 15 KV); insulation test of all circuits, motors and transformers; extensive documentation; QA and rework of substandard work by other crews.

Managed automotive, appliance and television-video departments in retail store. Responsibilities included purchasing, stock control and sales. Set up store’s videocassette movie rental program.

Owned a small business repairing TV and radio equipment, Marine radio and electronic equipment, and commercial electronic equipment. Business included 2-way commercial radio equipment, sales and service. Continued to run business as a sideline after taking Dennis Company position (above).

Worked in an industrial Research and Development Laboratory testing motors, fans, pumps, bearings and other components; worked to reduce production costs on existing products and develop new products. Company made evaporative air coolers and related equipment.On announcing my plans to leave, I was offered a Production Engineer's position.

Fisher Research Labs built custom industrial electronic systems, designing, developing and fabricating. We built Burn-In Ovens for the semiconductor memory business, and other one-off projects of all descriptions, including the internal telephone system for BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit system). Here my titles were, Purchasing Agent, Production Manager, and Field Service Engineer. I would prepare estimates on what it would actually cost to build a project, usually while the engineering was still in the arm-waving stage. Then once a contract was landed, I would order the parts in, and oversee and assist a team of 4 very skilled women who would actually assemble whatever it was. When there was a failure in a piece of previously sold equipment, I would catch a flight to wherever, with a 50-pound brief-case full of tools and fix the problem. The company ran on a shoestring margin, and generally never actually produced the “full set of engineering drawings” that was part of the quote. So, I would be catching a red-eye flight to a place I might never have been, to repair a piece of equipment built several years before that I’d never seen, with no drawings, only basic hand tools, and usually only the vaguest idea of how it worked. This is an environment in which the successful candidate learns very rapidly. I picked up the “knack” of being able to troubleshoot and repair electronic systems quickly and accurately, to the individual component when necessary. This tapped an understanding of physics, electronics learned the hard way, a logical thought process and, eventually, experience.

Two small companies that repackaged radio gear into engineered systems, for foreign sales, mostly South America and Africa. Some equipment was built from scratch, some was purchased, usually requiring modification, occasionally extensive.

Taught sailing and small boat safety during summers from 12-years old to 21-years old. Began as a Teaching Aide at 12. Taught adult evening classes alone at age 13.
