Melrose is served by a mayor and an eleven-member City Council. The City Council, formerly known as the Board of Aldermen, consists of seven ward councilors and four at-large councilors. All city councilors are elected to two-year terms in odd-numbered years. Melrose is predominantly residential, with most homes dating to the late 1800s, and has a Victorian downtown. Ell Pond is a natural feature in Melrose's center, trees line streets and parks throughout the city. The city is ringed by a "green belt" which includes the Middlesex Fells Reservation, Pine Banks and Mount Hood recreational areas. Melrose's recreational facilities include two golf courses and state-of-the-art athletic fields and track. Melrose offers MBTA public transit service, including three commuter rail stations, Cedar Park, Wyoming and Melrose Highlands, as well as direct, ready access Oak Grove Orange Line Station on the Malden/Melrose border, and several bus routes.
