About Frank Delaglio

I develop and promote computational techniques and working software in support of drug discovery and biomanufacturing, and in support of basic research in structural biology.This year I was given the American Chemical Society Award in Chemical Instrumentation, the first NIST scientist to receive this annual award established in 1955. I've had a high impact in my primary field of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) structural biology, where my NMRPipe software has been used to help generate roughly 40% of all NMR protein structures which have ever been measured. With over 15,000 citations, this software is the most cited work from the highly-cited Ad Bax group at the National Institutes of Health. What am I proud of? Getting comments like this about my presentations on spectral processing and applications of NMR: "That was the clearest talk of all lectures on complex subjects that I’ve ever seen." I’ve given over 200 invited and sponsored lectures and tutorials in 15 countries, including 20+ years as Advanced NMR course instructor for the European Molecular Biology Organization. I have not had a traditional academic career, and my emphasis has largely been on disseminating my research via software, so my publications do not capture the full scope of my scientific work, much of which has been commercial. As a consultant delivering software and guidance to pharma groups using NMR for drug discovery and development and vaccine quality control, I’ve personally placed my software solutions in over a dozen pharma companies.

I lead a group developing computational methods for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR), as part of a circle of groups doing basic research in structural biology, and groups developing metrology and standards for biomanufacturing of protein and live cell therapeutics. Our past work was awarded a Department of Commerce SiIver medal for contributions to biomanufacturing, and the current work in my group includes applications of chemometrics, machine learning, data visualization, and virtual reality.

I led the design and marketing efforts for Agilent's Magnetic Resonance software, with the strategy of using software to visibly elevate the value of the whole system. This included three software version releases in about two years time, a record for the NMR software group. These releases emphasized use of graphics design standards, data visualization, and overall improvement of the user experience. I also proposed and launched the divisions's first mobile software, an Android app for real-time remote monitoring of instrument status.In specialized cases, I contributed as a developer, including for automated spectral alignment methods in metabolomics and mixture analysis, and multidimensional reconstruction for Non-Uniformly Sampled (NUS) spectra.As a recognized expert in NMR spectral processing and analysis, I also advocated the company's NMR solutions at strategic sales presentations and scientific meetings. For example, at the 2014 International Conference on Magnetic Resonance in Biological Systems (ICMRBS), a competitor’s customer from the Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology went on record to say “Agilent’s ICMRBS seminar was the best vendor meeting I’ve ever attended. Frank Delaglio’s talk was the best vendor talk I’ve ever seen.”My colleagues at Agilent NMR were splendid, and I'll miss working with them.

Scientific software developer in a world leading structural biology laboratory; invited to this post by Dr. Ad Bax (with over 400 publications, Dr. Bax currently has a stunning h‐index of 160+, and his group invented the modern methods of triple‐resonance spectroscopy used to determine protein structure by NMR). My key work at the NIH was implementing a comprehensive set of software tools for multidimensional NMR processing, visualization, and analysis. This software, called the NMRPipe System, is now a standard tool for NMR structural biology throughout the world, and enjoys over 15,000 citations, making it the most cited work from this leading lab.My research at the NIH emphasized multidimensional signal processing, and novel database mining methods for extracting structural information from chemical shifts and residual dipolar couplings. I also created web-based computational server environments for key NMR structural biology applications such as TALOS, SPARTA, and DC.
