Served as the Director of Hardware Development responsible for developing equipment used in a Wireless Location System that allows carriers to locate E-911 calls made by mobile phones. WLS utilizes Location Measurement Units (LMUs) that are installed in base stations and locate mobile phones using Uplink Time Difference of Arrival (U-TDOA). Each LMU consists of a six-channel, high dynamic range, digital receiver operating at cellular and PCS frequency bands, a Digital Signal Processing assembly, a power supply, a T1/E1 interface assembly, and a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) timing receiver used for synchronization of LMUs across a network. TruePosition produced over 100,000 LMUs for wireless carriers in the U.S., transitioning from negative cash flow to earning $1+ billion in revenue in a few short years. As Director of HW, managed an organization of over 30 technical people covering RF Design, Digital Design, Electro-Mechanical Design, Compliance, and Automated Test Tool development. In 1999, was promoted to RF Engineering Manager and charged with building high-performance RF team responsible for design of RF and high-speed data converter circuitry needed in second and third generation RF products. Team consisted of 6 RF engineers, 3 technicians, and 1 printed circuit board designer. Through collaboration, teamwork, and long hours, led the team from conceptual architecture through circuit design, layout, fabrication, integration, testing, and deployment in roughly 7 months.Joined TruePosition in 1998 as Sr. RF Engineer responsible for design of RF and high-speed data converter circuitry for the company’s first WLS capable of locating digital phones. Developed architectures and detailed designs for digital receivers that incorporated RF amplifiers, mixers, digitally-controlled RF attenuators, IF amplifiers, PLL synthesizers, ceramic and SAW bandpass filters, DC-DC converters, linear regulators, and high-speed sampling ADCs operating at 60 MHz.

Served as one of the lead system design engineers responsible for the development of NextLevel’s Frequency Stacking System, which effectively quadruples the return RF bandwidth transmitted from an optical node to the headend processors without adding fiber. Increased return bandwidth is achieved by upconverting the signals at the optical node, transmitting over the fiber link where it is then received and downconverted at the headend. Specific duties: performed rigorous spurious analysis of upconversion and downconversion frequency plans, defined frequency conversion architecture and filtering requirements, allocated component specifications for frequency conversion hardware, performed detailed product design for the headend downconverter, and supervised system integration and testing. Previously served as the lead RF system engineer in the development of a set of T1/E1 RF modems, capable of providing telephony services over Hybrid Fiber/Coax (HFC) CATV networks. Led the design team in the development of a prototype system from scratch to successful demonstration at the Wester Cable Show in December of 1994. Th successful prototype was developed in less than 6 months through teamwork and long hours. Specific duties: defined broadband frequency conversion architecture and component specifications; designed headend and premises transmitters, receivers, synthesizers, and tracking filters; coordinated and managed team efforts; supervised mechanical packaging, fabrication, assembly, and testing of hardware.

Acted as the principle investigator of a team tasked with developing the technology needed for next generation, man-portable, satellite terminals. Coordinated technical efforts within Camden and with corporate research facilities in areas involving miniaturization of electronic circuitry, development of millimeter-wave power amplifiers, and investigation of antenna approaches that are both light-weight and easily deployed.Functioned as the technical leader in the development of a family of EHF solid-state power amplifiers for the Milstar Low Cost Terminal Program. Led the design team in the application of concurrent engineering through team brainstorming and problem solving sessions to develop the best low-cost approaches to the design. Maintained a steady focus on advanced solutions to the design issues to drive to the lowest cost design. The family of amplifiers were designed with a common architecture that maximized use of common submodules and devices, and to minimize maintenance costs, the amplifiers were designed to be modular and easily replaced. Defined the system level requirements and managed technical efforts of subcontractors and sister divisions. Generated and tracked schedules and cost estimates for development effort.Served as the lead engineer responsible for the development of miniature microwave downconverters and upconverters operating at Ku band for use in the Space-to-Space and Space-to-Ground communications links, which are part of the Communications and Tracking System for NASA Space Station Freedom. Defined architectures and conceptual mechanical layouts; established converter performance requirements and allocated specifications for subassemblies and components; designed components including low noise amplifiers, voltage variable attenuators, bandpass filters, lowpass filters, and bandstop filters. Also coordinated efforts with sister divisions and outside vendors for the fabrication of hardware.

Served as Project Engineer responsible for the development of microwave assemblies, involving all aspects from design to production. Such assemblies included multi-channel switched filter banks, broadband signal leveling loops, and multi-octave microwave filter/limiter/detector front-end. Also participated in the design of AEL’s first MMIC (monolithic microwave integrated circuit), and used commercially available MMICs in higher level assemblies.Functioned as a member of a design team that developed a four-channle 8 to 18 GHz MIC (Microwave Integrated Circuit) frequency converter for use in airborne electro-optic receiver. Specific duties included design of virtually all filters, multi-throw switches, and switch driver circuitry; supervised fabrication, assembly, and testing of prototype circuitry; participated in testing of overall prototype microwave receiver.
