Franklyn Small is a musician, composer and songwriter born and raised in London. He began writing songs at a young age, learning piano and guitar and developing his vocal skills, before going on to study Jazz Improvisation at Morley College and the History of Classical Composers at Roehampton Institute in London.In the summer of 2014, the fruit of Franklyn’s labour was introduced to the wider world when he completed the score for the short film Crude which was premiered at the home of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). The plot revolves around an Oil CEO and journalist, who are kidnapped with bombs set for mass destruction unless they agree to reparations via a critical phone call. The film highlights exploitation in the Niger Delta as a result of Oil production, and the score draws on traditional live African beats and ambient textures to create a dramatic landscape which harnesses the tension of the plot.The film was highly acclaimed and in early 2015 Franklyn was invited to the Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema (LA) to receive the ‘Best Foreign Featurette’ award, which has firmly established Franklyn within the film / composition scene in LA.In 2015 Franklyn worked with the critically acclaimed director Menelik Shabazz (The Story of Lovers Rock) to compose two original vocal scores for feature film Looking for Love – a unique feature length documentary about the very live issues of relationships, love, intimacy and sex. .Franklyn is known for being a highly versatile and passionate composer. His scores blend live instrumentation and electronic elements, whilst regularly drawing upon different influences and his vast experiences for each project, resulting in a diverse portfolio of contemporary work which touches all genres of music. He is regularly sought by innovative artists, to score for works involving both commercial and abstract themes.
